I am trying to connect my mac to an Insignia hdtv through the thunderport, but am not having any success. The TV says that the mac is not supported. Help please

I am trying to connect my Macbook pro to my Insignia HDtv through the thunderport on my mac. The tv flashes not supported. Can someone please help me? If further information is needed I will gladly give it.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I tried it on my inlaws tv and it worked fine. The tv is on the right input, I put it there manually.I can't post a screenshot because the issue isn't on my mac it's on the tv. The best way to describe it is like when you switch to an input that has nothing plugged in and it says no signal, instead of saying no signal it is saying not supported and moving around the tv screen.
