Firewire800 port disconnecting!

Have a New Mac Pro, and new Thunderbolt display.

Have been copying a large amount of files from a FW800 raid unit plugged into the TBD to a TB raid unit plugged into the Mac Pro.

Kept having IO errors that coincided with the machine sleeping (really? sleeping during file I/O? C'mon Apple)

Turned off sleep. Noticed same issue when display would go into lock/screensaver.

Disabled LOCK/Screensaver. FW800 drive remains mounted, and files continue to transfer.

So, short story is, machine has to be awake, monitors blazing in order to keep the FW800 drive (and apparently USB ports active according to a myriad of posts on the Internet)

Apple, are you working on this? Because I spent darn near 10 grand on this setup with you, and this is unacceptible.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 12 Core, 32GB 27" TBD

Apple usually does not look at these forums. You will need to send your comments to their feedback site. I have a Mac Mini and FW800 drive hooked directly to my TBD. I have not noticed any issues with my drive. I assume you are running Mavericks on your new pro? I noticed my FW drive never disconnects or even sleeps when my Mac sleeps no matter what settings I have set in the energy pane. Your Mac should not sleep if you are in the middle of moving files to your external drive so not sure what the issue would be unless something with the raid setup is not correct. Many people have had external drive issues since upgrading to Mavericks so that may be a possibility.

Thanks man,

I did send it to their feedback site long ago, and have heard nothing.

This problem only happens with the $1,000 Thunderbolt display. Apparently this happens with ANY device plugged into it. Since the drive in question is a Firewire 800 device, I had to plug it into the TBD since the new Mac Pro has no FW port.

I solved the issue for me by buying a TB to FW adapter (which I should not have had to) and using a TB port on the Mac Pro itself. Put all my power settings back, and it seems to work, but NOT if plugged into the TBD. What's the point of having those ports on the display if they're going to drop when it sleeps. ESPECIALLY a DRIVE! And a drive that also happened to be shared, causing all sorts of havoc. It's just completely unacceptible for this to be happening, and not addressed, especially considering that we the consumer are choosing quality (supposedly) by buying Apple products and paying a premium for it.

I just again checked my setup and I agree with you. When the TBD sleeps it also sleeps the FW800 external drive that I use for my TM. . I guess for me I never had any issue since I'm not using my Mac when the display is off. I assume if TM needs to do a backup and is interrunpted when the display sleeps it will pickup where it left off when the display is awake. I looked at my TM log and all is there so never missed anything. I also see that the USB2 ports are offline when the display sleeps. I guess they are all on the same circuit.
