This one does all I need, just wonder if at 8 years old it might get Parkinsons or terminal Heart attack......... Anyone got a working 2004 model ?

You can not run Mavericks on that model.

Thankyou stedman 1, that solved the first question. Any comment on Ageing Macs ?, or maybe it's good for another 8 years before it gets wafted into the clouds....

You're welcome. I can't speak to the 2004 vintage Macs, as I was a late Mac adopter. However, my '06 MacBook Pro is still working fine, albeit with a long dead battery. My '07 iMac has been recently been upgraded to Mavericks and is doing just fine.

Thanks for the encouraging info on 8 year old Macs. Will keep this one going until it starts to forget where it's been. Seriously, though, anyone venture to suggest a retirement age ? 10 ---- 12 ------ ?

I have a 2005 iMac running Tiger that still works perfectly. The Macs that I now use are newer models--I do like to keep up with the times, though can't bear to part with my first Mac.

Run it at the latest OSX it can run, make sure you have the maximum amount of RAM you can install and keep at least 30% of your hard drive free. Also avois any Security, anti-virus and maintenance software. Running a copy of DiskWarrior would not do it any harm also. It may last many more years yet. I still have an old G4 running fine in the shed.

Many thanks Pete and frazzm737, I think I can upgrade the RAM and will see if Disk Warrior will cure some of the odd stuff that happens.

On principle, I tend to agree with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy.

I also like to keep my first Mac from 1985 512k (with external 80k hard disc) Haven't plugged it in recently, but last time I tried it, it churned away ......
