How to start with a piece of sound?

Is it possible to lay down a track of music first, and then add images? When I try to put a piece of sound in an empty Project timeline, it just tells me that the piece of sound is 0 seconds long, and only as I add images does the sound start to play. And the sound stops when the image stops; I can't figure out how to extend the song further.

There must be a way to lay down a full, say 2 minute song and then add images to it, no?
