revisiond in Acitivity monitor

Hi,

Since a few days the fan on my computer is going strong Somebody suggested to look in the Activity monitor, and on top of the list there is "revisiond" 99% CPU.

What is it?? The fan is going strong even when I am not using heavy apps like Photoshop.

Please help

Pages-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You could try to Quit this revisiond from within Activity Monitor, but do look a little deeper into the parent source to see what is behind it first. Although quitting a runaway process may stop it for a time, a later restart of the computer could return the item into a runaway status.

•Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime,

affect performanace, and increase heat/fan activity:

However you may have to see if resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) could help resolve whatever the base issue behind such activities; and double-check to see if any user-installed add-ons or startup items are behind the loading problem.

•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

And there are other settings, not stored in the above,

that may affect the computer function.

•About NVRAM and PRAM:

Did you upgrade past Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

And do you have any additional items that startup

with your user account? Some add-ons can load

the processor unnecessarily.

You could get Etrecheck, run it, and see what the utility report shows.

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Perhaps someone seeing it can spot an item that may (or not) be part of a background pattern. Also, you could check your Console Utility logs for the time these occurrances appear active, and try to determine the cause.

Hopefully something relatively simple can resolve this.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Whow, thanks a lot. I am looking into it!!!....I am not that good in problem like that although, so far I solved most of the prolems by myself, but this is a step a bit far I think.

Anyway, I delet one app that I installed few days ago, and upgrade Pages which got frozen for some reason. I quit revisiond in Activity monitor, but nothing happen, still at 99%.

I also reset the System management controller but still I have Revisiond at 99%.

This morning the fan was quiet for a while but after using the Internet for about 10 min or so the fan started again, probably not as loud, but still there.

I am not sure what are the runaway application, I don't have any app open, a part safary and mail.!!

Thanks a lot for now. Will look at the other suggestions NVram etc.

😕 not so happy computing 😟

You could look into the section named 'Check for CPU Hogs' here:

The Safe Mac - Mac Performance Guide:

http://www.thesafemac.com/mpg/

There also is an issue with cleanmymac and any associated parts.

Plus genieo, conduit, mackeeper, and a host of other badware.

And that can be hard to be rid of, since it can also hog resources

and be a general nuisance to OS X, it is like a malware kinda sorta.

This revisiond problem is really curious; however it is a CPU hog

and you could trace it back to some other software running in the

OS X; there may be a path in Activity Monitor to show the way.

Yes, there are times when happier computing means a second Mac.

Apr 7, 2014 6:22 PM in response to K Shaffer

... this is a PS to the above ...

You may be able to isolate the revisiond item along the line of Console

(utility) listings, since it should appear rather high among Log entries there

due to frequency of use, at near 100%.

And you may consider a restart in SafeBoot mode (shift key held on startup

then shift key held again when you login to your admin account) to see how

the system appears to function. Not all of OS X works in SafeBoot mode.

You could try Disk Utility, repair disk permissions; also look into Console

logs over the past incidents of revisiond excessive percentage high use.

You may have to consider a reinstall of Mavericks; and then your purchased

applications and updates, as listed in the App store. If this issue persists,

it may be something to take to a Genius at an Apple Store for diagnostic

check and inspection. There may be a hardware fault behind this issue.

A visit to an Apple Store for Genius appointment, would be a free service

if you are in the US or Canada; even if the Mac no longer has AppleCare.

Note: about revisiond...

According to Apple Developer site, revisiond(8) info from Mac OS X Man Page:

http://bugreport.apple.com/

NAME
revisiond -- storage manager for document revisions
SYNOPSIS
revisiond
DESCRIPTION
revisiond is the daemon that manages document revisions created by applications and system services.
There are no configurations to revisiond, and users should not run revisiond manually.

(Not a Terminal or command-line for end users.)

So the issue may be traced back to an upgrade to Mavericks, or perhaps

an error in how data is stored, retrieved, and managed by the OS X; or

maybe an error in the hard disk drive(?) or logical problem, at worst.

There may be a way to run an Apple Hardware Test from the OS X Utilities

in your Mac, perhaps from Startup Manager. That may show some cause.

However AHT has been known to be inconclusive, and not a sure thing.

If you have a backup of your work, then consider the merits of a major

re-install of Mavericks; and hope the issue is not something saved in

a TimeMachine backup that could revisit your restored OS X later on.

Perhaps Linc Davis will see your issue, and have some clever yet technical

means of helping resolve this issue. This is such an odd problem, too.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Hi my friend and saviour....I succeded!!! this morning I restarted in safeBoot mode and it worked. When it finally started again at first it looked like I blow up my computer, all the apps was shaky and not responding, then I restarted again normally) and left it alone for a while, theni it was all right!!!

Of course I am not sure why it happenwd, when I looked at the Console it said:

07:37:47 revisiond: read failed on itemID......path.vol.......result too large.

And I have millions of entry like that for every secod of the past 3 days.... So there was something that the computer needed to do at the startup and couldnt do???

Anyway thanks a lot for your help, for your insight, and for all the links, it really helps to understand ...a bit...

Happy computing 🙂
