Print server not working with MacBook (but works on PPC Mini)

I'm having a problem setting up the print server on my uncle's new MacBook to work with his existing printer setup. He's using an IO-Gear wireless/USB print server and a Brother MFC-8440D printer/fax/scanner. After installing it, upon trying to print something it just says "job stopped."

This setup works fine from his main computer (a rev. A PowerPC Mac mini) and he can print off of the MacBook through Bonjour on the Mini, but the mini's not always on so we want a direct connection from the MacBook to the printer. It also works fine when connected to my rev. A TiBook running the latest Tiger update.

Here's what I've done so far.
1) Installed the appropriate printer driver and correct IP address.
2) Verified that the MacBook and the router are on good terms by accessing the router's IP address.
3) Reset the router and restarted the MacBook.
4) Deleted the Bonjour version of the printer and reinstalled the direct link.

But unlike everything else I've done since I switched to Macs after Jaguar came out, it doesn't seem to "just work." Any ideas of how to resolve this problem?

Hi there,

You should have a look at the cups error log to find out more about why the print job is stopping. Sometimes it can be caused by the users permissions to needed files or it could be a driver issue.

Open Applications > Utilities > Console. Click on the Logs icon and expand the /var/logs/cups and select error_log. For the attempted print job there will be an print job ID followed by a number of filters that are used to spool the job. You will then see the entry about the job stopping due to a problem with a process and its PID. Look back through the log for this PID and you will find which process the job failed on.

Most of the time running the Reset Permissions in Disk Utility is enough to resolve the problem. But the error could be due to a corrupt or missing filter, so a permission repair won't help in this case. Check the Brother web site for a Universal driver (one that has been written for Intel) as this may help with resolving some backend issues (I know that you said you installed the appropriate driver but you may have simply meant it was appropriate for the printer, not necessarily the MacIntel).

Regards,

Paul
