Volume disappearing YouTube

I have the iPhone 4S version 7.1. I've been having a problem where my volume bar disappears sometimes, usually when I'm on YouTube. It works just fine again when I plug in headphones but as soon as I take them out the volume disappears again. The side volume buttons don't do anything either. It doesn't happen all the time.
