I've been using my password for apple app purchases and it doesn't do the job...what should i do?

IF you set a password for your backup then only you will know it. If you cannot remember it then the backup is useless and you should delete it and do a new backup and this time don't set a password for the backup or write it down somewhere
If your backup is password protected, that means you elected to encrypt your backup some time in the past.

Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and choose set up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.
To add to the above responses, if you are on a Mac computer, your iTunes backup password "MIGHT" be in your keychain file. Windows? Nothing you can do.
