how to disable 'Preview functions'?

how to disable preview function in a mac? I just download a pic and the bloody preview program opens automatically with the picture! i didn;t ask the cumputer to do that! It is so annoyting when the computer does things that you don;t want to do, does anyone knows how to stop Preview automatic functions to happen?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

well one of the function is:


In Safari there is a setting to automatically open "safe" files. Jpegs and other image files just so happen to be one of those safe files. To disable automatically opening safe files open safari preferences and on the general tab uncheck the "automatically open safe files" option.
