2008 macbook unable to update to mavericks software - why?

It won't allow me to update my mac os x 10.7.5 software to mavericks on my 2008 macbook despite having all the correct requirements - why? help!

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Please verify your model by clicking the Apple logo and selecting "About this Mac" then "More info". The identifier needs to be 5,1 or higher.

sorry, whats the identifier? i cant see anything about that when i go to 'about this mac'.

also, its a macbook air from 2008

finally found it, its only 1,1! what does that mean? can i change that?

When you click About this Mac, then click "More Info" it will show the model identifier. For the MacBook Air it needs to be:

Introduced October 2008

Discontinued June 2009

Model Identifier MacBookAir2,1

Model Number A1304

Sorry, no you can't change that. Lion (10.7.5) is the highest possible for that model.
