grid lines in numbers, how do you switch them on and off?
I am having trouble getting the grid lines to show in numbers, the format has grid lines highlighted in blue but switching this off or on has no effect on grid lines in the sheet

Hi algebra,
What version of Numbers are you using? Menu > Numbers > About Numbers
Numbers '09 (Numbers 2.3) does things differently from Numbers '13 (Numbers 3.x)
Your profile shows dell, Windows 2000 which is not a lot of help in finding an answer 😉.

Ian.
Aplogies I have an iMac and the numbers version is 3.2, I'll update my profile right now
Hi algebra,
I got an email notification of your reply, but this page has not yet updated. This forum software sometimes is out of sync with the emails.
Numbers 3.2
Click on the 'bullseye' top left of the table to select the whole table
In the format panel on the right of the Numbers window, click on Cell
Border > Line style, Width (I prefer 1pt), Colour (I prefer Black) , border pattern (I prefer to set them all the same, see below)

A sheet contains finite-sized tables. A table only show the row and column headers when the table is activated (you clicked on the table or in a cell of the table).
Can you provide any other details when you want to the gridlines to appear?
And having formatted a table to your liking, Menu > File > Save As Template.

I maybe being a bit thick here, but borders and grid lines are very different in excel which I know alot more about. I am converting to numbers. What you have given me is borders (which print unless you take them off again before you print) The grid lines I am looking for are those which only show on the screen and do not print, This allows me to have some line for printing for totals ets but see the difference on the screen and not worry about taking of some of my cell borders before printing.
I have existing tables on various sheets, some of which show grid lines and some do not. having selected the table in the sheets both show the grid lines boxes in format: table: grid lines as blue, however, one sheet shows them and the other does not
Hi algebra,
Numbers is suited to several small tables, each with a purpose. There could be an input table, database, number-crunching table and a "presentation" (summary) table. Each table can link to other tables, and each can be on different sheets. Perhaps your working tables could have borders to assist you, and your final (presentation) table could have no borders.

Ian
I am sorry but these answers are not solving my problem.
The problem is that in the format panel on the right, under the Table tab, there is a area that is marked Grid Lines. These are either highlighted blue or grey.
Having selected a table, I can't get the grid lines to appear irrespective of whether the boxes are blue or grey.
How do you use this format panel grid line please?
Hi algebra,
When I tried to show or hide grid lines in a custom table, nothing worked. They do work in a table inserted by Menu > Insert > Table, or from the Table button on the toolbar:
My custom table was created in Numbers 2.3 and saved as a template. It is now a template in Numbers 3.2. Maybe that is the difference?

Ian.
Thanks, I appreciate your help, I have got a work round using your idea. I import a table and create the formats I need in this and then copy but only paste style, a bit clumbersome but saves re writing large spreadsheets.
Thanks
