My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

User uploaded file

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

To all staingate victims--

Apple has you covered. They know they f'd up big time so they are offering to fix the screens under their "quality program." No warranty needed. It was a manufacturer's defect that took them a while to figure out. Just visit an Apple Store, drop off your MacBook, and you'll have a new, stain-free screen in under a week.

I brought my MacBook Pro into the Manhattan Beach store on Saturday, no hassles. They estimated five business days but probably sooner than that. I have my work laptop in the meantime so it's not too inconvenient.

Hope this puts some of you at ease. Again, just bring your computer in to an Apple Store and they will take care of it free of charge.

it's hard to make out what your point is other than over-the-top arrogance.

The fact is that my problem persists, the coating continues to deteriorate and new users are joining the complaint list daily.

"I think all serious arguments are over" Who made you the ultimate decider of this forum? if you weren't so serious you would be a funny caricature.

While i can't stop you from your snide comments and bullying behavior i will no longer respond to you after this. I am sure you will continue to attempt to engage with personal negative and disparaging attacks and try to one up and put down.

Hey you two lovebirds, calm down. The matter is too serious to fight over it; at least in-between each other. Save your energy for Apple.

As to the argument, let us assume Apple is right and the damage is cosmetic. I'm actually astonished - the least to say - that Apple comes up with that argument. This as frankly speaking consumers of Apple products are willing to pay double the money compared to competitor products precisely because of design, aesthetics, cosmetics and last but not least quality. If we Apple consumers wouldn't care for that, we wouldn't be Apple consumers in the first place. Functionality in contrast was never a selling argument for me.

So whether this is a cosmetic damage or a functional damage is a pretty mood argument in respect to Apple products.

Another aspect of cause is the loss in value in this case. I used to be able to sell my Apple products 2nd hand (before purchasing the new and latest products) to a very good price because of the quality of manufacturing. My Macbook Retina is no longer sellable at all or if at quite a reduced price. This makes my Macbook Retina even more expensive.

Hi all.

Thanks for your post, flexier. Good points.

There is a lot of disappointment, anger and frustration in the air. And rightfully so.

We all feel cheated and on top of this Apple is behaving shamefully and arrogantly.

But lets keep the ball on Apples side.

And lets stand together in this matter.

This is the only way we have a chance - if any at all...

Many gretings

... I know...my english.... but I was so angry that I have not bothered.

That's why now I think there is no more to say on THIS Apple Community Forum.

It might be useful to post which screen you guys have, LG or Samsung. I'm wondering if it happens on both screens.

How to check:

Go to your Applications folder and launch Terminal. Paste in the following and hit return:

ioreg -lw0 | grep "EDID" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

Look at the beginning of the second line to see which manufacturer made your display. If it starts with LP then you have an LG display. Samsung displays start with LSN

Hey guys!

If anybody of us wants some answer from Apple within this thread we need to put preasure on Apple regarding this issue!

AND more important spread the word within your home country and language. Meaning: get in contact with potential computer magazines, suitable forums, etc. - making this issue even more public!

It is on us, if we can make Apple show some reaction to us!

It returns only:

@.`0 6

Color LCD

This command probably doesn't work with MBPr13''

ioreg -lw0 | grep -i "DisplayVendorID"

returns

"DisplayVendorID" = 1552

and I can't find what does it mean

ioreg -lw0 | grep -i "DisplayProductID"

"DisplayProductID" = 40984
