Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

There is a class action lawsuit being build up as we speak. Let's see if Apple replaces the faulty screens in the end for free.

It is a shame that a lawsuit needs to be threatened to get Apple to do the right thing. There is no doubt that this is a manufacturing defect and we pay a lot of money for these machines.

    ps. filled in the questionnaire.

I looked closer at the stainage and there is also a stripe in the center of my screen. It's the size of the space key and the position matches it. There is no way I would have done it by cleaning my screen. And this is again after using my laptop for a bit over half a year. I thought Apple computer were of highest quality and the company cared much about its reputation. I'm not sure if that's true anymore...

Update: spoke to Apple today. They say they are going to fix my screen at no charge - covered by Apple Care. So will be taking it into the Apple Store in Scottsdale next week.

    Hello all,

two days ago I sent a lengthy email to Tim Cook about the whole issue, praising the company and asking them for a free replacement to an obvious manufacture problem. Yesterday I received a call from Apple telling me to bring my macbook pro to my nearest genius bar for a free display replacement. Today I left my laptop there and it will be back in two days, free of charge.

Guys, keep going forward. Apple knows about this issue and asking them politely can do the trick!

PS: my macbook pro is WAY out of warranty, by the way.

This  "hand oil theory" can not be true. I have never closed my MBP so not possible for oils etc from fingers on keys to get to screen. It is pure and simple a manufacturing defect . Stains like this simply should not happen on a Laptop of this so called quality. Mine started small and seem to be growing ever day and I never touch the screen. I have not even tried to wipe it off with microfasser and water past two months.

I spoke with apple support in US and they advised I take it to Apple store and let them decide.

Lady I spoke with was not ever aware of this issue.

So how far up the Apple Chain has this problem gone?

I Just switched from Microsoft to Apple on the 4th of September,2015!

I paid almost $2700 yet, I found my screen has scratch that I did not do!

In only 3 day of use! I don't even clean my screen yet!

How come Apple?! Should I go back to Microsoft? Mac pro 15 mid 2015

Return it. You have a 14 day full money back warranty. So if you have not caused any damage and it is a manufacturing fault you will get a refund and be able to purchase what you choose.

    Cheers

Significant stain damage on my late 2013 rMBP in the center of the screen around the trackpad region when closed. Always cleaned per apple instructions. Genius bar did an in-store clamshell replacement under Applecare coverage. They stated that it wasn't official policy to cover the replacement, but agreed that I was in no way at fault and covering it was the right thing to do. Hopefully new display holds up better than the last.

We have numerous ipads/iphones/mac books in our family and all screens experience the same cleaning liquid. Yet, my mac book gets staines and no own else does. Of course, it could be associated with the manufacturing of this single device. However, closer inspection of our usage habits indicate, that I started to develop the habit to take my shiny mac book out for field work in hot and sunny countries, whereas the rest of the family keeps their devices in save heavens at home. The staines developed first in the centre (on the other side of the plastic apple on the lid) and around the bezel (with less ability for heat dissipation) which might indicate a heat related failure. Checking the spec sheet for mac books, the operating temperature goes only up to 35 deg, whereas other computers I use are rated up to 60 deg. Given that our body temperature is 37 deg, this means one might want to avoid that a mac book actually feels hot. Of course, that is very speculative, as I am not an expert, but at least it is a consistent explanation of my observations. I guess the normal temperature sensors on the motherboard are implemented to protect the CPU from overheating, but not the screen. Will try to keep my mac book cooler in the future and see what happens.

Same things happening to mine. I don't know how it happenened but my screen started looking a little weird which i thought it was a plastic film cover on it so i let it go for about 4 months. Then i called to ask apple a question. And i asked about my screen at the same time. come to find out my warranty was 11 days pass due so they couldn't help unless i was willing to pay for the repair.I have another mac thats a little older and i don't have problems with that screen just the retina.

I joined the club this morning.  I had not cleaned my screen in a long time.  I wiped it dry with a microfiber and noticed what i thought were scratches.  one in the middle of the screen scratching east and west, and what look like the beginnings on delaminating on the bevel itself beginning on the west side of the laptop.  I bought this model August 25th 2014.  I do not know its model make date.

So I called apple and made an appointment at the store for Saturday.  well see , they indicated on the phone that screen replacement would not be covered, even though I paid for 3 years of coverage through applecare.  I should have bought geek sqaud or Farmers insurance it looks like.  After I got off the phone I started googling "macbook screen delimitation" and ended up here. Wow.  I just cant believe it. We are recent mac converts we started moving over in 2012.  I absolutely despise windows anything and Linux takes too much time to keep going, so I figured a buy in at apple was just the ticket.  Actually I was set make another buy for my husbands upgrade, and then this happened, we had 2500$ in the cart this morning at best buy and I have just dumped it all until we see what happens at the store from this.

I keep my mac in a Book Book case , it gets zipped up, and stays protected.  There is no customer damage here.  This is just unreal.  Screen Shot 2015-09-10 at 6.21.12 PM.png
