Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

    Good luck with your case.

But I also hope all this time you haven't been closing your rMBP with that pink silicon keyboard cover still on, right?

Yes I do. However, that is not the common denominator.  It is also not where my issues originated , they have begun at the bezel.  The skin on the keys did not cause my bevel to start to delaminate.  This is too wide spread.  Also, I would need to sit down on the mac in order to cause that to happen.  And I have not.

It is a production issue, more likely I would hazard to guess a trial of a cheaper material since this has only been showing up in the last few years of the models and skewed at that.  It coinsides with the price drop a few years back for the entry level mac's.   I also noticed a good chunk of them are complaints from people who live in the more hot and humid climates. Suggesting it is flawed during use within enviornment as well.

I fully expect GB to show me the door, however I will be requesting a written quote and a written statement on what they think I did wrong as to tamper their product..

I will request they refund me the balance due for the remaining Applecare I have purchased, as I have just rolled over 1 year a few days ago, and I will get the names of the individuals I speak with so I can contribute that to the issue at hand.

    Thats all I can do.

Going forward we will not be buying any more apple products.  Not right now at least, even if they fix the screen issue(highly doubtful).  I priced a nice new Dell Preloaded with Linux Last night that has 4K resolution , a workstation, and we will just go back to Linux.  System 76 is out of stock on their best models so I cant do a buy there.

In the past two years we have spent :

    iPad Air -1289.00$ Nov 2012 (+ applecare 99$ + Case 129$)

    iPhone 5s 849$ Dec 2012 (+ applecare 99$ + case 125$)

    iPhone 5s 649$ Jan 2013 (+ applecare 99$ + case 125$)

    iPad mini Retina 499$ Oct 2014 = (+ applecare 99$ + case 89$)

    Macbook Pro - 1459.00$ August 2014 (+ applecare 249$ + case 79$)

    Applecare = 645$

    Cases - 547$

    Total = 5937$

We all in the house watched the Live Event several days ago and I put a new iPad on the list, Apple TV and a new mac for buy.

This is not a user issue.  Similar to  several years ago when apple claimed that it was a user issue that was blowing out the graphics cards.  Yes, because obviously the user must have watched one too many movies on the computer and overtaxxed it.

For the same reason I cannnot climb into the computer and use the logic board incorrectly, I also cannot climb over to the other side of the glass and rub the protective coating wrong.  Cleaning the glass, that results in the inside anti reflective coating peeling off, which has a functional purpose and thus it is there, is a manufacturing defect.  Recognized or not.  Accepted or not.  Everyone cleans their screens on every computer out there.  If one cannot reasonably assume to clean their screen it should be in a museum and not on a shelf for sale.  Defintly, not for the pricetag one pays to get an Apple.

People that buy Apple, dont mistreat their items, because if you bought an Apple, you already had to know more about computer care than the average windows user because you had to care where your 1000's, not 100's are being spent.  Also most people who buy Apple have to finance and dont take that lightly, so not only are folks genuinly more careful they also have that in the back of their mind too because most times they arent done paying for it.  You also, dont spend that kind of money without taking proper care and precautions for care and use of your preciouses.

    Cheers.

Save your rant for Apple. We are just other users. Venting here won't solve your issue.

Yes, but this is a discussion board about an issue plaguing at least one model of MacBook, so his first-hand experience and opinions could be quite useful to passersby. Are you a moderator here? Otherwise I don't really understand the need to tell people what and what not to talk about.

Wow, Signal, we were just writing our posts at the same time...

(I don't expect them to stay too long here, before kicked out)...

Some people are misinformed and do not read the Terms Of Use before agreeing to them. They sometimes believe that their posts here are read by Apple. They are not. That is what Apple's Feedback is for. Therein lies the need to tell people why their rants fall on deaf ears here and the they need to follow the successful and positive posts here and take their unit into your local Apple Store.

    Cheers

I agree—he should tell Apple directly. But it serves its purpose here, too, so no need for him to "save" it.

Thanks for the friendly clarification. Cheers.

Yes I think it's safe to agree it is a manufacturing defect, an interesting one at that since it has spread across several years of rMBP's but doesn't seem to affect all, just some.  The biggest obstacle for Apple doing a mass recall on such a defect is they also have to negotiate with their supplier who is also at fault since Apple contracts out their manufacturing.

However, Apple has published a technical document advising rMBP users to NOT use silicon keyboard covers with their rMBP's due to the tight tolerances between the screen and keys when closed. (just a fyi)

Thank you for the FYI.  I was not aware of that.  Of course people rarely become aware of such things unless in passing or until they have an issue and look it up.  I am glad nonetheless for your tip.  Many Thanks !

    Hi,

just another one on the list.

    MBPretina 13'

Ordered online February 2014 (so a late '13 model)

Marks appeared late summer 2014. Thought it was dirt

Didn't bother cleaning until it got really annoying

Water and optical cleaning cloth. Marks grew. I realized I was removing something that had started removing on its own.

Then I found here I have got a place in ****.

In my case I bought my MBP in November 2013 in Canada, and have made the complaint in the retail Buenos Aires Argentina, even in New York on the 5th Ave and 52 St. This forum does not read Apple, I think that only service technical sum claims and should consider the solution for all of us.
