Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

Early 2013 MBP Retina 2.7ghz Core I7 16gb ram and 500ssd Intel HD graphics 4000

I was cleaning my screen with a lint free cloth a few weeks ago and had this same thing happen to my display. I noticed a few specks that seemed like an oily substance so I spent a little more time on the area and it seemed to get worse. After a bit of rubbing I realized a coating of some sort was coming off because the specks got larger. I thought now way there was that much oily substance smearing around into an area this large. When I finally stopped my few specs turned into a large area with the coating off. I am so disappointed and it pains me to look at my screen on the right side. At the genius bar they said it would be in the $700 range to replace it. I wish it was like the older ones that the glass could just be replaced.

This is my 6th Macbook to own in 14 years beginning with the Titanium Macbook Pro in 2001 and this is the first problem I have ever had with a laptop. Good and bad...

I hope Apple stands behind this product.

I never knew what it was until now, but my Mid-2012 Retina has this giant line across the screen from where the coating wore off. Not too happy...

    Hi all,

I have the same issue, on a MacBook Pro 13-inch Late 2013 - Purchased in Feb 2014, and after 7 months noticed the screen damages!

Same response from Apple - Cosmetic damage !! No satisfaction.

im already panicking on this, hope there is a fix on this. My previous macbook didnt have any issue with the screen even though many years passed from its buy date.

I have had the same issue, with the coating going from around the left, top and right edges which is where I assume I'm touching the screen on open/close. 2012 rMBP.

Apple New Zealand did replace the screen for me so I'm lucky.

    The question is:

How do we prevent this happening again? I have a microfibre cloth which I use between the keyboard and the screen. Will that actually help? Should I avoid cleaning the screen as much as possible?

Oh you are one of the few lucky ones.

To avoid the problem from happening again, you should neither clean it nor carry it around in a bag.

In fact you should not close it, for the screen will touch the keyboard and it may happen again.

Or better yet: don't touch it after you unbox it.

I am also having issues with my Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 2012) model. The screen looks like its rubbing off near the camera. Its really ugly and really annoying. Apple should offer replacements for these.

Yep, we consumers of Apple products have gotten it completely wrong. MacBooks are no ordinary laptops to be used, they are pieces of art to be framed and hung to the wall. Good art is and always has been a bit more expensive and required a bit extra care. So make sure the spotlight shining on your piece of art is not too aggressive.

    Hi gng15

Apparently it doesn't matter if you have Apple Care or not.

The only thing is that you saved money on an extra insurance which doesn't cover.

Add my name to the list.  I noticed this happening on my Late-2013 work laptop about 2 weeks ago.  Like others, was just cleaning the screen like I'm supposed to.  For me it started in the upper corners.  It looked like a smudge.  But as I cleaned, the "smudge" spread.  I then realized it was some sort of coating that was coming off.  So, I stopped cleaning.

I dread when this may happen to my personal Late-2013 MBP.  Fortunately, I have AppleCare on these, and saw other posts saying that taking it to the AppleStore resulted in getting the display replaced.  We'll see.

Very disappointed in this, though.  This is my 4th or 5th MBP (for personal use), and 2nd for work.  First time I've had an issue where it looks like by design, poor choices were made by material selection (that has affected me, that is).  This coating is crap, and Apple should fix the problem and replace those that are brought in with issues with a solution that doesn't cause this!  High resolution retina screens are useless if the fine resolution is obscured by the damaged coating.

    Cheers,

    -Alex

I'm having the same issues (Macbook Pro Retina 15" late 2013). Stains appear after 6 months of buying the macbook (bought it in november 2013).

I went to an Apple Authorized Service Provider in The Netherlands, but they refused (on behalf of Apple) to replace my screen. The said it was user damage.

It's really ugly and annoying, especially around the camera and keyboard area. It's a 2500+ euro machine, not some cheap plastic thing...
