Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

I've got the same problem.  At first the problem was slight and I didn't think much of it but now it's affected more than half of my screen.  Brought my MBP down to the service centre (I live in Singapore) and I was told that it was "cosmetic" and that it wasn't covered.  I am sorely disappointed with Apple for such a poor quality coating which can't even stand up to normal use and the cost quoted to me to replace the screen is just prohibitive.

I do hope that Apple gives us a satisfactory answer and renew faith in them

Do something Apple! you can't say it's not your respondsibility! It is not the quality that we've paid for! You can't say our MacBooks are out of warranty so we've to pay to replace the display! Because the computers have quality issue!

APPLE! DO SOMETHING!!! I'm sick about the creepy disgusting screen!!!

    Pete,

Do us all a favour and stop bugging us with your fruitless comments.

If Apple is here or not is of no concern to those that want to post their frustration here. In any case, from the repeated links added here (and subsequently removed by the censors) you know that we all make sure that Apple is somewhat listening, be it here or elsewhere.

Finally, Apple ought to be here and I'm sure Apple is in matter of fact here, despite their eerie silence.

So again, kindly leave this discussion.

    Thanks

    Matthias

Same problem here! Macbook Pro Retina late 2013 I7 512GB 16GB RAM, around 2500 USD. It's my 4-th Macbook and I cleaned the screen as usual, any special liquids or fibres. First 4 screens were perfectly fine for several years and latest, and most expensive one is damaged...

For me, Macbook is not a fancy toy but a every-day tool. It must be reasonably durable. It's absolutely unacceptable when you might "damage" the screen finishing by simply cleaning it up.

    APPLE! DO SOMETHING!!! PLEASE.

I always thought this was some kind of hard-to-remove dirt, but I never dared to give it a firmer rub with a cloth, nor use alcohol or anything. I *am* taking good care of all my hardware, even carrying them in a protective sleeve/bag.

As AAPL suggests, I used a slightly damp microfiber cloth (normally used for glasses) to remove any loose dust and fingerprints from the screen - this worked without any problems. This is a first generation MBP Retina from Mid 2012.

Looking at all those photos in this thread I'm getting a feeling that the coating somehow reacts with bodily fluids because:

    1) In my case most of those spots are around the top of the display, which would somehow indicate that it has to do something with sweat from your fingers, which might react with the coating.

    2) Saliva? Other photos show random spots all over the screen, which might happen if you talk while physically close to the display.

Just my two cents, I'm staying tuned on how Apple will react to this.

No, it's a public forum, apparently. So I choose to stay.......often.

If you contact Apple, as advised a number of times, then you will have more success. This is not a chat page, or Facebook or Twitter, despite what your IQ indicates.  Contact Apple feedback

Other than that, please leave these discussions if you have nothing of Technical Input to add, other than stamping your feet like a child. There are ways to contact Apple, and despite your delusions, this is not one of them.

    Pete,

I have been giving my technical input here (search for it). Actually my input had more relevance and was surely more useful than any of your comments that were without any exception non technical. Otherwise my IQ is just well above average according to the Mensa test, so I can't complain about that. Thanks for asking.

Anyway Pete, continue pestering already angry Apple consumers. It seems you are enjoying it.

Out of interest. How noticeable is it when your just using it in a normally lit room. Obviously people are shining a lot of day light onto the mac to take a photo to show the damage. Does it look that bad when your using it normally? I recently got my MacBook and it looks like one of those things I am just going to have to deal with if it happens as Apple won't replace the screens. And I don't have hundreds of pounds to replace a screen for it just to happen again. Since reading this thread I've been extra careful. Washing my hands before use, Cleaning the keyboard and only very lightly using the micro fibre cloth with no water etc. Seems like I have to take drastic measures to keep a £1200 machine from getting damaged. Of course if it happens I will submit feedback to Apple. Mine is the Mid 2014 model.

    Hovercraft,

the reason why people shine a lot of light on the screen when taking sample images is because it is difficult to catch the effect with a camera. But I will attach an image from my screen taken in my office with all windows covered by blinds and lights off. I also adjusted the screen brightness to 100%.

You can still clearly see stains at the bottom right of the image. In my case the stains are actually the leftovers of the anti-clare coating (this as a tried removing the coating and succeeded only to 90%).

Whilst the image looks as if the problem is not as severe, my eyes (or my brain respectively) tell me otherwise.
