Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

This is, how mine looks. Bought in December 2012, first repaired in August 2013 because of pixel errors and scratches. Yesterday apple denied any replacement because of german law. A had an "offer" from the apple service provider about 819,- Euros for replacing it. Wow, Apple, thanks for this "premium" product.

Mine is nowhere near as bad as some but I have tried to keep mine from getting worse for the past year since I noticed it starting…  This is after a good wipe down with the cloth that came with the macbook, The only thing I use to clean the screen. It is mostly the outlines in the keys in my case, but I never expected something like this from apple. This is my first macbook and have taken care of it very well.

"German law?" What does it mean?

Wonder if anyone has experience with the Moshi iVisor Premium Anti-Glare Screen Protector for MacBook Pro Retina. It claims to be easy installed without bubbles. It is not that cheap, so before I purchase I maybe get some advice here.

I got the iVisor after I noticed my AR coating coming off to prevent it from getting worse. It's not a bad solution, it basically sticks only and you can remove it for cleaning and then put it back. But it does take some of that Retina screen's quality; the image is a bit more grainy. Not ideal if you need to work a lot on image and video manipulation. But it does help to prevent AR damage...

It means, that the deliverer (can be apple, if you purchase directly, but in my case its a computer distributor) has to give you 2 years warranty, that your device is without errors when delivered. Its another thing than apples warranty of 12 months.

    Thanks Acki,

A little reduction in image quality is OK with me. I'm an iOS developer (custom apps for our company), so I can live with that. Don't do much imaging work and if I do I use a second larger monitor.

@mwille64 anyway you can always remove it temporarily if you need Retina's full capacity. It's a bit of a hassle, but better than smudges on the screen Which doesn't change the fact that this shouldn't happen in the first place...

I have a mid 2014 Macbook Retina 15 and I can see spots of it on my display. Very disappointed. APPLE at least give us a respond or acknowledgment that you heard us!

They have heard us. I have them on the phone on a weekly basis. But the Executive Relations officer is the gatekeeper deciding what gets through and what doesn't. This clearly doesn't.

No risk at all. I removed 90% of the coating using water and a bit of alcohol (5%). The rest of the coating is not removable (as it should be). And if it does go away with iVisor then it would be worth while spending the money ;-)

Did you try to use polish paste?
