Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

I watch quite a bit of MBPr related videos on YouTube.  I'm leaving links to the staingate org website in my YouTube comments.  I also left a link on my LinkedIn account.

    Hovercraft,

the reason why people shine a lot of light on the screen when taking sample images is because it is difficult to catch the effect with a camera. But I will attach an image from my screen taken in my office with all windows covered by blinds and lights off. I also adjusted the screen brightness to 100%.

You can still clearly see stains at the bottom right of the image. In my case the stains are actually the leftovers of the anti-clare coating (this as a tried removing the coating and succeeded only to 90%).

Whilst the image looks as if the problem is not as severe, my eyes (or my brain respectively) tell me otherwise.

I understand why people are shining the light on the screens for the photos. So the damage can be clearly seen. I just wanted to see what it looked like when its being used normal. I'm just wondering what I am going to have to deal if it happens to mine..and by the number of people that are having this issue it's a high possibility. Thanks very much for the photo. Taking as many precautions as possible to prevent it from happening so if it happens there is nothing I could of done to prevent it.

@hovercroft: it depends really... When you use a bright application (eg text editor, surfing, emails...) you can hardly spot the stains. But when you're using darker colors on your screen, for instance AutoCAD or Photoshop, or when you're watching movies, you definitely see the stain. Obviously the light in the room you are in also influences how much you see the stain; it is after all the anti reflection coating that's missing, so you got a shiny spot smackbam in the middle of your screen.

The problem is: These things should not happen even after three years later at a cost of 2000 euro. A force to reduce the thickness were eliminated essential elements of protection .. is logical that a film is worn out to a minimum friction, but the worst thing that can be caused by rubbing mac keys!!

I'm really concerned. I got my MacBook Pro 15-inch with retina-display mid-2014 model back in January 12 2015. It's been almost 2moth since I had this machine and right now I'm very concerned about this issue of anti-reflective coating. I clean with Apple's included cleaning cloth almost everyday and shockingly heard about this issue. Anyway to prevent this issue? Should I instead purchase Apple Care which it cost like $350 to prevent this problem? I was thinking if Apple designed this computer I would think that rubber surrounding the display would prevent from screen and keyboard from touching.

Consider insuring this on your home owners policy if you have one.  It's significantly cheaper.  I pay $30/year to insure all of my computers at replacement value.

I have the very same coating problems with my late 2012 rMBP and I can tell you, they are pretty annoying because they are – at least in my case – visible on white backgrounds (like in Word/Photoshop...).

    The same happening with me.

I bought my macbook pro retina 13' on march 2014 (exactly 1 year), and I have always cleaned with a lint-free cloth and water and extremely precaution since I've seen that problem here on forum.

    However, the same happened.

In the following week I'm going to Apple Store to check what they can do to solve that. I hope not being disappointed by the Apple support.

Was it replaced for the same defect or something else?
