Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

    Hi guys,

Here is another macbook pro user with the same problems. I bought my macbook in oktober 2013, so that makes it a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, late 2013). After 6 months or so I saw the first spots on the edges. It started around the camera and in the corners; so I thought it was some spots from my fingers. I tried to clean the spots with the special black apple cloth, but then it get worser! I stopped cleaning and tried to find more informatie on internet but couldn't find anything at that moment. 1 year after buying my macbook the edges look like the picture shows below. I was affraid it was just my fault, but after cleaning my screen today (again with the apple cloth) a strange dot on the middel of the screen (picture 2 below) start to grow! I was always thinking it was a dead pixel... but now I know it isn't. Before making it even worser, I stopped cleaning again and called apple care. They told me my macbook is out of the 1 year warranty, but because I live in Holland I'm entitled to have another year of warranty by law. I have to bring my macbook pro to the store and they will sent it out for repair.

I'm affraid they will say it's a cosmetic damage, after reading your stories... But it cannot be Apple remains silence. I'm a very happy apple-usere for over 10 years now and even though I think the prices are out of proportion, I still want to use apple in stead of windows or android. But if apple will resist making my screen, and your screens too, I will never ever buy an apple product...

So let's hope we all can get a new screen with apple warranty or consumer warranty! Stand up for your rights people. If you live in Europe you have a warranty of 2 years! The second year of this part you should probably contact the store you bought your product... but don't let apple say it's cosmetic damage, because if it was that problem; apple wouldn't have repaired the screens in the apple 1-year warranty!t th

Last thing: the person I spoke with on the phone was from apple care (Holland) and he told me: It sounds like the  auto reflection coating releases. That must be a factory/manufacturing fault" The people in the applestore have to take a look at it to make sure I didn't do anything wrong... so hopefully they will recognize the problem and see it's not my fault.

Keep sharing pictures.. because of your pictures I realised I had the same problemes..!

I really wonder if this coating only last about 12month or an year. I really do expect more then this out of pro level notebook as Apple says. I have mid-2014 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina-display and as I said several times in the previous replies I am extremely concerned. Mine hasn't been affected yet sense I purchased on January of 2015 which is very recent, but this coating should be permanent and shell not be removed during usage. Really want to know if anybody in this forum topic who has mid-2014 MacBook Pros and got affected by stain damage.

This is truly a bummer.  I intended on buying a rMBP last week until I ran by this thread.  Now it is an absolute 'no go'.  I've been very happy with my iPad. Though I have no evidence to prove this, but I imagine if Tim Cook's rMBP was having the same issue it would be replaced faster than you can say 'Apple'. Apple customers should be no different.

Seen dozens of pictures, it seems there are just 2 different stains groups, both probably related with the quality of the screen cover material: inside and outside stains. Outside issues are like in your video cleaning it with the Apple damp cloth after a short time: the display shows blurred opaque stains with quite white brightness, in a similar way you´ll sand a glass with sandpaper. Inside issues are darker with sharper edges, due to the detachment of the coating film (like air bubbles). Probably outside stains are made by friction, and inside stains by dilation, both due to the poor abrasion resistance and thermic incompatibility of the external material.

After seen dozens of cases and pictures, here it is a summary of the main characteristics of the Macbook Pro Retina stains and what the users think about what are the causes.

    Hope it helps.

I know It wasn't you. Previously I have commented your post and have added sth.

It is sick. They spend money and time to delete users post. The same time they don't want explain this situation. If they really know there are external factors responsible for this issue why Apple technical are quiet. Why Apple do not want to explain how avoid this issue. Silence...

    It is really sick.

Hi, I have a similar issue, but mine is a simple macbook white 2010.

On 2012 Apple changed all my top case, including the display of course, because another problem in that time, appeared a deep crack in the plastic part from the hinge from nothing. Now a few months ago (or years by now?) my screen, which is not a retina, is covered with bubbles and scratches from the inside, do you think is the same problem as the retina ones?

If Apple says this is a cosmetic problem, and because of that don't want to repair it, so why they have a replacement plan for the bottom case of the macbook, which indeed is an awful cosmetic problem? is because this is a more expensive fix? http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/

My mac is no longer covered by AppleCare.

I asked for a quote for the replacement of the display, € 839!

I haven't had this issue (touch wood). but IF this happens to me and Apple refuse to fix it even with me having Applecare, I can guarantee 2 things will happen:

    1. I will NEVER buy another Apple device again.  Windows isn't the best OS, but at least you can get it on many types of devices that are of excellent build quality (and cheaper).

    2. If any of my friends think about buying a Macbook, I will ensure that I make them aware of this issue and let them decide on their own.

I love my Macbook though, so I really hope Apple see sense and do the right thing by replacing these screens free of charge for those still under warranty.
