Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

Apple needs to fix every single Macbook whether under guarantee, warranty or not. Simply because many of us haven't realised that this is an issue before coming across this discussion. If we would have been aware that we are not alone and that this is not our own fault, we would have had a chance to claim a guarantee or warranty case in time (rejected or not).

I suspect Apple will point to these AppleCare stipulations regarding product liability (e.g., will not cover ):

    - Cosmetic damage to the Covered Equipment including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken plastic on ports;

    - Defects caused by normal wear and tear or otherwise due to normal aging of the product.

Though I'm not an attorney, it does seem that they would have problems defending themselves. For instance, it has been demonstrated (via YouTube) that cleaning the screen using the provided Apple cleaning cloth and tap water has resulted in damaged screens. I don't see how following Apple's recommended cleaning instructions would absolve them from responsibility when the result is neither a scratch, dent, nor a broken plastic port. The definition of a scratch is to 'score or mark the surface (of something ) with a sharp or pointed object'. The last time I looked, a cleaning cloth is not a sharp or pointed object. And if so, Apple is providing the very tool to damage its own product not to mention instructions on how to do so. As for normal wear and tear due to normal aging, this would be a colossal public relations snafu, because then Apple would have to acknowledge their retina screens (as part of normal wear and tear and aging) will become marred and visually unattractive within six months of purchase (something no other manufacture I can think of shares the same characteristic).

In the end it will come down to dollars: number of complainants and cost to replace the screens vs the public image cost and potential long term lost sales. Whichever of the two proves the least financial hit is the course of action Apple will take. Right now they've decided the public image hit pales in comparison to the cost of replacing the screens.

I went to my local Apple Store for this problem one year ago, got it back and it was worse then before. I think they tried to polish it away. They told me that they could fix it for around 1000 dollars. That *****!!photo.JPG

Finally, mine looks exactly like yours, and finally I could get rid off 100% of that strange cover and now my screen it's like a new one.

It seems to be inside, but it's like a cover that gets oily with time. You could try in a corner with some spot and see if you can get my results. Clean with a damp cloth with a little of dishwashing detergent (very little indeed) and the cloth not so wet. But the main thing is to clean strong, not as usual and repeatedly.

really an easy fix, for me worked perfect!

The screen of my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 looks like this - hope for a free repair (I am very disappointed by this quality of a € 2000+ notebook, always have bought apple products because I wanted high quality devices)

    Lads,

I went to the Apple Store Amsterdam with my MacBook on Saturday. The genius's looked at the screen and instantly took it for repair, no questions asked. My MacBook is 13 months old and I do have AppleCare. The whole clamshell got changed and it took them 6 hours to do it.  Maybe this will help you?  Good luck at your local Apple store.

Yes Kamabokohere is a before and after photos. As I said before (pag.34), mine is not a macbook retina, but after I changed the display in 2012, starts to get this ugly spots like bubbles and scratches all over the screen, it looks like were inside, but definitely was like a oily cover over all the screen that get the stains, removing all the cover was my solution. I always clean my macbook, but in this case you have to do much more strength than usual. As Pibo5 shown us there are different types of stains, may be this procedure is not working for all, but may help someones with this kind of stains.

My MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) is slowly getting this stains on the edge as well. Is there any proof that new models don't have this problem?

Mid 2014 and later? Would be interesting if Apple fixed this problem already? Maybe we still have to worry after the replacement.

    Hi alekb,

Thanks for posting the pictures.  Now that the screen has been wiped of its coating, have you noticed a difference in color saturation?  For instance, do the colors on the screen look as vibrant as before or do they look muted in some way?

    Thanks,

    K

Apple hasn't fixed this problem for the mid-2014 model. These are foto's of my MBPr MID-14. The stain keeps getting bigger.

It's still in one year warranty so I am thinking of going to a Apple Authorised Service Provider (iCentre) later this month.

This is a good post.  It shows the inconsistencies shown by Apple

We need to know what makes your case different from others'?

    Congratulations for getting yours fixed.
