Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

If they refuse and say you are not cleaning it properly, ask them to show you how to clean it.

They are there to help you out after all.

It will be interesting to see if they show you.

Hopefully they'll take it straight away and fix it for you.

Thanks, I'll certainly do that. It will be pretty funny if they make it worse.

Though after all those story's on Facebook and this forum, I don't have many hope they'll fix it for free.

It will be great if Apple comes with a repair program for all those effected by this problem. I didn't pay 1300 euros for this...

A bit more media coverage anyways. Keeping the issue alive and growing.

Do you have pictures of your MBr before?

    Lads,

I went to the Apple Store Amsterdam with my MacBook on Saturday. The genius's looked at the screen and instantly took it for repair, no questions asked. My MacBook is 13 months old and I do have AppleCare. The whole clamshell got changed and it took them 6 hours to do it.  I am attaching my "work authorization" as a proof, see notes the genius made. Maybe this will help you?  Good luck at your local Apple store.

    Hi Rafal_jot,

yes I do, I have posted it on Page 31 of this discussion. As you see the problem wasn't so severe, but the Apple Store in Amsterdam has replaced my whole clamshell for free.
    PS: I do have AppleCare

There is another substance removing the coating...bleach! Any toilette cleaner based on highly concentrated bleach will do.

I went to the apple store yesterday. They offered to repair it free of charge, as it was still under warranty.

Owning a 15" Macbook Pro bought March 2014, I'm really worried about the retina screen having read the thread. Should I just take it to an Apple store when the screen needs cleaning and ask them to clean it for me? If everyone did that, would the message get through to Apple?

Same issue here, went to an Apple service center and they gave me a quote of €600. It's no longer under warranty and they told me it was my own fault.

People telling that they solved this specific issue just have a dirty screen, not a missing coating. You can't really rub a coating back on a screen.

I am experiencing the same issue on a Mac Pro retina 15 sept 2012; the problem is at the beginning, few little spots near the frame. I have cleaned the screen only 2 or 3 times with the apposite microfiber cloth without pressing carefully. Thanks to this forum I'll absolutely not try to clean it with risk of worsen the problem. Instead I think of apply a moshy ivisor screen protector that seem not adhesive, waiting for a solution by apple. I agree with all of you that is a shame.

Hi all, another try to share my experience with you.

Hopefully this time my post makes it through the censorhip...

Here is a picture of my macbook retina with the same stains as everybody else..

    macbook13inchretina.jpg

I took my late 2012 apple retina  to the Apple store in Amsterdam. They would not replace the screen for me because:

    1. it is damage to the outside of the product

    2. it is more than 2 years old which is over the guarantee consumers right period in the Netherlands

My apple genius even claimed it was NOT a common problem.

VERY coincidentally a guy sat next to me at the Apple bar with the exact same problem with his screen. Macbook retina from the exact same period (late 2012). He however had apple-care and his screen was immediately replaced!

I was given the option of replacing the screen at my own costs: €457 !!

This is very disappointing for a laptop purchased for almost €1800 in december 2012.

I am 100% sure this is a production fault.

    What about you guys?

Did they ask for your apple care?

My retina is 2.5 years old, no apple care....

As a long time Apple customer ON THE VERGE OF SPENDING £2000+ on a Macbook Pro - I am now VERY RELUCTANT TO GO AHEAD. I was literally about to place the order and became aware of this issue.

My old Late 2009 Macbook has had similar issues with the screen (I think it's separation of internal layers of the screen?) and it's very disappointing to see that this sort of thing is still going on without any acknowledgement from Apple.

Apple - you're losing business over this. Do the right thing NOW to save further embarrassment and lost sales.
