Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

Apple considers this a cosmetic issue and is not under warranty.  I have a similar issue which developed a little longer than a year after I purchased my MacBook Pro Retnia.  Apple should do better quality control on this issue and make good for its defect in manufacturing!   You would think they would better stand behind its products in a timely fashion.

Same here, it starts at the top or the screen, around the FaceTime camera. Must be the touch of our fingers when opening the lid. Apple suggests using a lint free cloth and water to clean for obvious reasons. But our skin contains fats, acids and other contaminations. And then there are our fingernails which touch the screen. Try opening the lid without ever touching the anti glare layer. Not possible. Apple, please solve this problem.

We'll see if they make good on this issue soon.  But, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Same here. Stains all over the black frame after cleaning the display with a mico fiber cloth and pure water. No chemicals what so ever. More, there are five large white spots of about 1 cm size visible when the display shows a bright screen. This is crap! Hardware for 2500,- €!! So annoying.

Keep this post alive, front and center on Apple's discussion boards.  Maybe, they just might do something about this major manufacturing defect. Everyone, please keep posting of this problem.

Keep the post alive? not sufficient!

You should continue to write to the Apple customer service (of your country and headquarter)

    As I have done:

    "

    Dear Apple customer service,

I am an extremely loyal customer of apple products.

I have apple computer since I was a child, and I constantly use them for my work and everyday life.

I regularly purchase a new mac every 2/3 years, however I was extremely disappointed by my last macbook pro 15’ retina.

I have purchased it for the Christmas of 2012 and after two years the antireflection coating of screen started to remove…

I have always cleaned the screen with a humid microfiber paper, like many other apple customers that suffer of a similar problem.

I have already contacted the Apple italian customer service, who claims that is an accidental damage due to the “normal" use.

I am extremely sorry and disappointed for the low quality of this apple product and service of assistance that was offered.

Furthermore, I should admit that I am not sure to purchase again an apple product after this bad experience.

I enclose to the present mail a picture (and a later-made movie) of my screen together with the official answer of italian apple service.

I hope you will give a different reply of Italian Apple service and satisfy my kindly request of a free-of-charge screen substitution.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

    Best Regards

    IM"

You're right.  It may not be enough.  I'm going to take my future business elsewhere.  No more Apple products for me, ever.  They have lost my loyalty.

Apple seem to be doing OK

I'm sure they will go broke without your patronage.

This is true.  They will be just fine.  But we all vote with our wallets.  Our voices will be better heard if we all collectively not buy their products until Apple makes good for its manufacturing defects.

It's the anti reflective coating that wears off with normal cleaning (micro cloth with a little water).  This is clearly a manufacturing defect.

I have just developed the same problem. I have an early 2013 15 inch macbook pro retina, I noticed what I though was a fingerprint smudge near the isight camera so I followed the recommended cleaning method as I have done before and used a slightly wet lint free cloth to try and clean it. After just a few quick wipes with very little pressure, I realized it was the actual black antiglare coat coming off. I now have a large area around my isight camera that has come off. Luckily it is only in the bezel area and does not overlap with the actual screen. It is however very annoying as it catches light and draws attention. This is unacceptable for a device that commands such a premium price from a company that prides itself on design and aesthetic. I am under applecare and am planning to visit a genius bar to see if they will replace the screen. I am however nervous after reading this thread that they will turn me away. I have been trying to find alternatives fixes incase this happens. I was wondering about buying a screen protector such as the moshi ivisor (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Moshi-iVisor-Case-MacBook-Retina/dp/B009J90R4W) as it has a black bezel of its own and should cover the exposed area. I may even buy this and cut out the actual screen part out and just use the black bezel sticker so I do not reduce the quality of the retina display. It is not an extremely cheap option but is significantly better than paying for a new screen.

Good luck with the genius bar.  This has been hit and miss depending.  Hopefully, you'll have a good experience, and they'll repair it free of charge.  Please let us know how you make out with them.

Here we go, a second smart guy who believes that 1300+ (and growing) Apple consumers are stupid enough to damage their Apple products.
