Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

Yeah that's enough time to resolve the issue. They managed to pump out new products every few months but can't make things right with customers that were affected by defective products. Seems unity is the best option in situations like this. As of now,  I can get a brand new sealed macbook pro 15" mid-2014 with fully maxed out specs. 1tb,16gb, etc. for 2,000 but I won't buy another product from apple until they make things right with their customers. If this makes sense to you, then you should do the same.

I've switched over to a Windows machine.  I found this great little company who assembles its computers all right here in Florida.  Their tech support is really good and free for the life of your computer.  The equipment is high quality and has been the best functioning computer I've ever owned.  I've been running Avast free version and Malware Bytes paid version, never had a problem with viruses or malware.  It's been rock solid.  Not to mention you have far more programs developed for Windows.

    Hi epvaldo,

I was a Windows guy for a long time but after a couple of years I became a huge fan of Apple products. First, I used one hackintosh, then another, and finally I ended up with six iMacs/MacBook pros that I use for work. I must say that I'm very happy with the "Mac experience" and it's fine to pay a premium if the machines work as they should. The rMBP is the first real flaw that I experience. I could also live with the occourance of a flaw but I cannot live with the way Apple treats this problem. If THIS continues, I'm done with Apple hardware and start hackintoshing again. What is the sense in paying premium when you get a bad product?

I agree with you. I wouldn't mine paying a premium if a company 100% backs its products.  But my feeling is Apple is starting to make disposable products at premium prices.

    If using THIS screen protector

    http://www.moshi.com/ivisor-ag-for-macbook-pro-retina#15

makes the the coating come of when you remove it (what it was designed for), it can't be a problem of us not cleaning the screen correctly

Since I'm also a victim of the GPU bug, I hope there'll be a solution for this soon, because owning a device with multiple flaws was not what I intended when I spent the extra money for Apple hardware.

    Regards (from stained germany)

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

oh no, so you're blessed twice!

Concerning my copy of the rMBP, it appears to me that the coating of the screen comes off gradually. I always have the same protocol for cleaning which is laying the display on a soft cotton cloth (supporting the keyboard side) and then gently wiping the display with a microfiber cloth and very little water.

For the first 18 months I didn't realize any damages but after the last cleaning, I saw the first stains on the black border. I don't dare to clean the screen with water again. Such a shame.

I think it is common scenario. It is perfect for many months and one day starts to getting off rapidly.

Ok, so I'm trying to remove the rest of the failed reflective coating.  What I've done so far is put bleach on a rag and apply it to the screen.  After rubbing for a little while, the anti reflective coating along the perimeter came off fairly easily.  The center on the other hand is much harder.  They're some spot in the middle where it came off.  However, most is very stubborn.

The application of the product appears to be very inconsistant in thickness for this to occur.  If it were the same, it either would have all come off or not.  Anyway, has anyone had luck with removing the failed anti reflective coating?

Paying 2,000 up and having to deal with that is a tragedy.

Yes, please post an image of your current result.

The coating has no different thicknesses, but the bond between the glass and the coating is differently strong.

Another little hint I did not mention, keep the cotton cloth pretty dry (do not use to much fluid). This increases the rubbing effect. You know that you are on the right track when the dark looking coating becomes lighter in colour and you think it gets even worse. Continued rubbing however will eventfully remove the last bit of coating. It is a painful job. As said before, you must be patient.

I also had mentioned in my previous posting that I had very good results with a stain remover with a 12% acid content. This stain remover is no longer produced by the company I got it from, but I will go around here in some shops trying to ask for a similar product with the same ingredients. I will keep you posted.

Don't give up. Would be nice if we could establish a procedure that works for more owners of the rMBP than just me ;-)

Very sad to say I have to add myself to the club:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), 15 months old.

I've only ever used iKlear to clean the screen, as directed, since purchase. This week the screen went from no marks at all to this, in one clean:

Very disappointed! The biggest problem for me is that it's going to seriously devalue the rMBP when I come to upgrade in the next six-nine months. I've bought and sold many, many Apple products and the fact that they've retained such a high percentage of their value has meant I've been able to stay 'on the ladder'.
