Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

No it won't.  Some people had reported that stains occurred when they took the moshi product off.  The AR coating can be very frail.  I wouldn't buy it until this issue is resolved.

What's your purpose for buying this device?  I would look for alternate means.

In that case I would buy a used mac pro and put an external monitor on it.  This way you won't have to deal the retina problem.  Macsales.com sells some used macs.  At least this way you're not spending money on a product that probably going to fail.  You could even buy a used macbook pro non retina model.  Let Apple shake things out and fix this problem first.

Will have to look into other options. Thank god I stumbled upon the "Staingate" issue before time had passed and money gone in the drain!

Look above the "reply" in the attached photo. Whenever the background of the screen is bright (word document, most webpages), I see a bright white spot in the middle of screen. Anyone know what's going on? Can honestly say I have taken perfect care of this laptop, truly is in perfect condition. Gonna take it into Apple store to try and get screen replaced since it is less than 1 year old. Any advice?

    Yep, same here!

I have the stains PLUS 5 white spots, each approx. 1 cm in diameter in the lower third of the screen. I use my stuff always with great care so I can definitely rule  out that I caused this problem.

As with the stains, it's a common problem. You can find threads here:

Retina Macbook Pro LCD Mura (White Spot)

    and here

White spot on my Retina MacBook Pro?

    and here

Bright Spot on Macbook Pro Retina Display

There will be a lot more, but these were the first three threads I found with google.

I took the Macbook to an Apple Store and had long discussions on the phone with Applecare. They concluded that they will do nothing about ist because the Macbook was out of warranty. As yours is still under warranty I would try to get the screen replaced.

    Good luck!

Following up: took it into Apple Store and they are replacing the retina screen for free under warranty.

This issue started on my 2013 rMBP the other day. Brought it in for a repair covered under Apple Care yesterday. But won't this just happen again in a year 1/2? My warranty ends at the end of next year...

Yes, it could happen again.  But if they're going to replace it, I would go for it.  Hopefully they straightened out the issue.  Anyway, I just replace my screen today myself.  It wasn't too bad.  I got the replacement screen from eBay for $270 and replaced it in about an hour or so.  ifixit.com has the instructions which is very good.

The coating starts to come off this morning on my lovely early 2014 MBP Retina 13"

I feel worried it will get worse How can I do? How does Apple reply the problem?IMG_9595.JPG

    Hi James,

the bad news is, that (1) it will get worse and (2) Apple still ignores this problem saying it is a cosmetic issue that is not covered by warranty. Some here got their screens replaced, however. It seems that it is an individual decision. Still, most people here in this thread have been turned away.

My advice is to at least try your luck at an Apple store and use the internet, there is a gate for your screen stain problems :-)

    Good luck!

There is only one right technical solution for this problem: a screen replacement and Apple should do it because this is a material failure.
