Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

This is an obvious defect.  I don't touch my screen and mine started a few days ago, rarely even use the laptop, primarily an IPad user.  My MacBook Pro cost about $1700 in 12/13, probably has less than 50 hours on it.  Already had to replace the memory board, now out of warranty.  Will never buy another Apple product, selling my stock too.

Thank goodness I found this thread, I've been thinking I did something wrong and racking my brain trying to figure out what it could be. I'm part of the club too now I guess. Apple, help us out here, we all bought your most expensive top of the line laptop!

Can you please give me more details on this letter that the dealer received.  eg. date it was sent, any additional details on the letter.  If we could get a hold of this letter it would be very helpful.

I have exactly this problem too.

I bought my MBPr in January 2014.

I had the same issues within two months of buying my MacBook Pro retina in January 2014.  I was horrified but they replaced it in March 2014 under warranty.   I noticed it beginning again yesterday and I am gutted. I don't know how I could have been more careful. It's impossible to gently wipe off a thumb print now without another piece flaking/dissolving.  I have an appointment at the Genius bar in Glasgow on Friday but I am prepared to have corporate tosh spouted at me.  The replacement last year under warranty would have been £400 according to the invoice and they called it delamination. I can see consumer organisations being the only way forward now.  I hope I'm wrong.

    Hi folks,

Sorry to ask what might be a dumb question, but if the problem here is the anti-reflection coating, what is it that limits the issue to Retina screens?

Might Apple use the same coating on all screens, regardless of the resolution?

Some of these may be the coating, but mine is not.  There are bubbles in the screen, not superficial plus stains that resemble an etch a sketch.

I know someone who said he rarely cleans his screen, maybe once a month.  It's a late 2012 model.  So far so good. If you try to clean it regularly,  you may run into the coating failure.  The screen is just too sensitive to be used on a laptop.  We need it to be much more dependable.

Let's just say for grins and giggles Apple has sold 10 million rMBP models.  This is not a hard to number to imagine given they are reported to have sold 4.7M mac units in the first quarter of 2015 ( of assorted models).   If we take the current base of around 2000 complaints, that would be .0002 percent.  Playing Devils advocated, if I were Apple I wouldn't do a thing unless the numbers hit around 10%.  Your best alternative is not to buy another rMBP until they fix this problem.  I don't think Apple will be crushed by the weight of a few thousand people.  But then again....I could be wrong.

I think you're right. Just don't buy from a company that doesn't properly stand behind its products!
