Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

I saw a post from a member in Amsterdam who got a replacement post warranty, and they quoted the repair no. I’ll ask about this on Friday, but I don’t suppose social media posts will be entertained.

I have no idea why the Retina screen coating is an issue.  I just know that of all the MacBooks or laptops I’ve had on the past this has never happened before.

Let's just say for grins and giggles Apple has sold 10 million rMBP models.  This is not a hard to number to imagine given they are reported to have sold 4.7M mac units in the first quarter of 2015 ( of assorted models).   If we take the current base of around 2000 complaints, that would be .0002 percent.  Playing Devils advocated, if I were Apple I wouldn't do a thing unless the numbers hit around 10%.  Your best alternative is not to buy another rMBP until they fix this problem.  I don't think Apple will be crushed by the weight of a few thousand people.  But then again....I could be wrong.

    Hi Kamaboko,

it's 0.02 % given your numbers (of course not that big difference) :-) But I assume this number will rise. I agree, that Apple will not be crushed by some 2000-10000 defective screens but it may react anyway. I cannot get more precise because my posts get censored. Plus, it's not the only issue concerning the rMBP: There is the white dots problem, for example. Additionally, the damage to the image of the company cannot be underestimated. It's already suffering, maybe not because of the stains but for other reasons.

I still like the company, I still like the products but I would not recommend them without reservations any more to my friends an colleagues.

Question to Apple: is the problem solved on the new Macbook pro 15', which is presented today?

    @ ilio m

    To answer your question:

1- This is not an Apple forum. The company does not answer questions posted here. Only Apple consumers do.

2- Well, so far Apple didn't acknowledge there is a problem so they have nothing to solve.

3- My personal advice would be, if you are considering buying, I'd wait to see where all this leads.

Admittedly I was lazy at the time didn't bother to move the decimal.  That said, I think the biggest snafu Apple has faced (that I can recall anyway) was the iPhone 4 antennagate.  A class action lawsuit resulted in a $15 payout or a 'bumper' per complainant..

I think one of the most important points here is Apple is not being expedient in addressing this issue (and similarly with prior issues).  Part of the customer experience is how they address problems / issues with hardware failures too and not hide under the cosmetic umbrella.  At the end of the day, keeping the customer happy stands for something.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to communicate this problem with Apple Store employees that helps them understand what's going on? Can anyone who has had success here share what they said and did?

P.S. Sorry to add to this pile, but I'm now another "Apple has deleted my post" person (for being non-constructive complaint or rant). So Apple is responding, just not in a helpful (to us, the customers) way.

Just posting to say this problem has recently appeared on my 7 month old MacBook Pro Retina 13. I've been cleaning it with a lint free cloth and a tiny bit of water if necessary, yet recently the coating has visibly started to wear away at the top left of the screen, to the point where I'm very wary to clean the screen again. This is understandably annoying because as well the unsightly mark from the coating rubbing off, the screen is also covered in fingerprints and dirt that I'm afraid to wipe clean in case I cause more damage. Hopefully Apple will recognise the number of users affected and start to acknowledge the issue soon!
