Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

Two weeks ago I tested a lot of MacBookPro Retina 13 inch from:

-Saturn (a german big reseller for electronic stuff)

    -Gravis (a big Apple reseller)

-Medi Max (like Saturn, but smaller)

    -Apple Store

All devices at one day. I used the keyboard/touchpad feeling and I saw a difference between the keyboards:

-one version had the normal keyboard (like the keyboards from the normal MacBookPro). The keys where a little big higher and the sound was more thud (I hope somebody can understand.

-the other version with thinner keys, more into the chase from the device. The keyboard sounds are more jingling

I think, that the second Version is a newer version with thinner keys which have no contact to the display when the device is closed.

    Hi!

I have the same problem. I bought my Mac (2012 mid) two weeks ago in a Cortland shop (largest Polish Apple products distributor) as a used computer with Apple Care (I've 9 months guarantee). The first spot appeared a week ago, in the upper left corner. Now you can see the badges of the first traces of the touchpad and keyboard.

I got the idea (if someone check please opinion) to purchase such protection film's for ex. Moshi. Perhaps it will stop the process of separation antiglare coating.

$200 (13000RUB?) normaly it costs about $500. Are you sure?

Just had this happen on my late 2013 rMBP 15, giving it a quick wipe down with water before a customer presentation.  Two months out of warranty, there goes the resale value.

What? Not a manufacturing issue? LOL! That's a bad joke, isn't it?

This is the archetype of a manufacturing issue, if you can swipe away the anti reflex coating by a microfiber tissue plus a little bit of water. The damage must have been already applied when coating the glass at the manufactures premises. I have been working eight years as engineer for OC Oerlikon. They make production plants for thin film coatings like this and the company is also delivering the process applications, but often - specially in Asia - the application instructions are completely ignored the moment the Swiss application engineer leaves the company and flies home to Europe. Ergo: invalid done process application by ignoring application instructions are resulting exactly in problems like that. A correctly done production run of coating process like this, used e.g. for glasses, sun glasses, lenses etc. or screens like this you normally can even not scratch by a nail.

My MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) has no such problems. So I swear: The problems mentioned in this thread are clearly caused by a wasted production run. This is definitely not only a "cosmetic problem".

Shame on Apple, leaving the customers alone with this problem. The display glass is a spare part - I must guess - Apple pays probably not more than one USD for it. So they should be obliging to their customers and replace this on Apples costs. After all, most customers have spent > 2000 USD for the device and Apple is making a huge profit by selling its computers at this high prices.

    Greetings

This is a very bad case of Apple mucking it's customers:

    1. Not all MacBook Pro Retina have this problem.
    2. Some MacBooks Pros Retina have this problem
    3. Logical conclusion: it is definitely a manufacturing problem.

See also my comment above (about page 4).

Thats 200% as clear as day.

Yes, acid on your fingers (and oils) transferred to the keys, THEN to the display when closed.

but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage

No.........thats stripped AR coating FROM the screen,  not  ON THE SCREEN.

Youre thinking its something THERE, when its something MISSING

I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem,

Dont dare use that, that will ruin your screen.

if water and microfiber arent working,

They wont work, because your hand oils and acids have stripped the AR coating off part of the screen. Keep cleaner hands when using your Mac.

Some people have naturally VERY HIGH acidic skin excretions,  you may have this issue.

Re. Anti-glare / AR coating issues on retina screen

I don’t know how to best express my surprise, my disappointment and my regret over my Macbook Pro 15” 2013 Retina. The anti-glare / AR coating is coming off. It started small but keeps growing. To my luck - I thought - a month and a half before the warranty expired.

But having contacted the dealer in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and having chatted with Apple, the reply is devastating: not covered by warranty. Not covered by warranty??? Apple automatically presumes that the screen is damaged because the laptop has been carried in a bag or due to wrong cleaning.

I however, had no idea, that I had bought a desktop computer. For apparently it is not advisable to carry your almost $3,000 portable laptop around in a computer bag (the most expensive “portable” laptop I have ever had). And I didn’t know that having to clean the screen almost daily, due to marks from the keyboard, would cause such a problem. Furthermore, I had no idea that using a microfiber cloth and breath would cause such problems (breath from a slim, and healthy, non-smoking and non-drinking male on predominantly vegan diet… so a clean, acetone, tarr and alcohol free breath, I think it is rightful to assume).

As you are certainly well aware, we are many users with this problem. And from those of us, whose comments have not yet been removed from the Apple Support site due to “unconstructive” language… the disappointment and the frustration is unmistakeable. All the more inappropriate is it, that Apple stays silent and does not take responsibility. The list of complaints is long and growing daily. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6068947?tstart=0

How can issues related to production and product quality, to choice of materials and manufacturing… not be covered by warranty? Utterly unacceptable! As is the price of $950, which your authorised dealer in Addis Ababa kindly offered me to replace the entire screen case - since the glass alone cannot be changed, apparently! Another remarkable manufacturing flaw. And should I myself care to spend almost $1000 to repair my less than one year old laptop… what guarantee does Apple give, that I will not encounter the same problem after some months?

Rather I am now impatiently awaiting your response as to how you intend to recover my laptop and help restore my lost joy of owing an Apple product.

    Sincerely

    Joakim L.

Oh cool, Apple removed my last reply to this post commenting it is not constructive. Of course it was: for the customers. I will repost it in Facebook.

However: one reason more not to by an iMac 27 Retina.

    Best regards,
