Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

I'm just wondering, why my guarantee case for well known display stain problem affecting Macbook Pro  was not recognised (Odessa, Ukraine), while lot of other users were lucky and got their screens replaced? Who else is facing this problem? Did you have success with reclamation? I have to say, I'm very disappointed, I'm using my macbook for professional programming and image editing and I absolutely can't accept the see any kind of something looking like a dirt or stains on the screen...

I have the same issue - I could take a picture, but it is the same as many others on this thread on my Macbook Pro mid 2012 Retina.  Big streak in the middle and little "dots" where the keys have obviously impacted the screen.  Took it in while under warranty and they said the same, cosmetic damage, no warranty!

I have the same issue. Used Alcohol-FREE wipes. Screen wipes. Specifically designed for screens. Not water, not saliva, not drops of sweat. And the parts where this started appearing had some whitish bubble-like dust specks, before i wiped them and they turned into this!

I used the same amount of pressure as normal, just a regular screen wipe down. It looked like some dust left a smudge, i thought maybe it was some grime, so i wiped again and it left more and more damage.

I haven't been to the Apple store yet, but they are in for one angry visitor, as this has clearly been coming from the screen coating bubbling up and coming off. Which is what I noticed on the last two specks, which I tried to wipe (when i started suspecting something unusual).

All the bs excuses aside (finger pressure, scaly dandruff scratching it off, magical pixie dust landing on the screen,  transportation damage, too close proximity to an android device) - this is clearly a manufacturing issue and it should be replaced at no cost (albeit some inconvenience is in order - they'll probably take an eternity + forever to replace a thing)!

Try being polite when you take it in and you may achieve better results.

It really shouldn't have anything to do with being polite or not. This coating failure is a manufacturering defect for the most part.

Fair enough. But the way you approach staff anywhere works a lot in the result you achieve. Go in angry, see how you go.

Been in to apple store bath in UK. Was very polite, said 'anti reflective coating has rubbed off" and he replied OK very straightforward we will just replace the screen.

I was very polite and thankful. It's all really up to who you get and what mood they are in.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

I bought my Macbook in Switzerland from Apple Online. I took it to the Apple Store in Zurich and they told me they would check what could be done, the Genius adviser came back a few minutes later and said his manager told him they could only replace the screen if I paid for it, 700 CHF (c700USD) but he quietly told me to call Apple Support and see what they could do to help. I called Apple support and they contacted the store while I was on the phone. The lady in Ireland told me that the issue is "Cosmetic" it would not be covered under warranty and it would not be covered under Apple Care.

She sent  me a link to submit some photos and said a technician would review the photos and if Apple's decision changes I could review the situation again with them.

I'm very annoyed about it. Like many people I spend a lot of money on Apple products and really expected better, I regret not buying the machine in the UK as it would have been covered under the 5 year fit for purpose consumer law.

I will try taking it to another store and see if I get a different response.

I took it to Apple Genius Bar yesterday in San Francisco. They are going to replace the screen for me. If you don't have Apple Care, if will cost $623.86 plus $39 for Hardware Repair Labor.

I have experience with my skin oil being more acidic than normal as I've corroded other stuff, and mosquitoes prefer me to other people. So I understand that it's from my acidic skin oil, but honestly wft--I'm not that weird, and for $3000 I'd expect them to use something a little more robust, or make it a user option with warnings about acidic skin oil. I mean, in the two years I've owned my MBR, I've rarely closed the cover because it's my workhorse and just stays open on my desk 24/7. So the damage to the coating happened way too easily. I understand it's essentially cosmetic, but it's still a mark of careless design, given the price point. I'm out of warranty, and I don't regret not getting the extended warranty, but I think anyone who can get the screen replaced as a warranty repair should do it. Apple will only step up the quality control if this kind of oversight costs them.

Exact same problem here: MBPr late 2013.

    No chemicals, only microfibre cloth.

I speak from Brazil and I am having the same problem. I took technical assistance "UTI do Micro" and changing the screen was rejected by Apple. Apple will have to switch screens. They exchanged the screen of some people and not others, why ?. I called Apple on Monday and so far have not given me any answer and the support  did not return any e-mail my. Apple is now a company like any other. My computer is under warranty, the screen has less than a year old and never spent any chemicals.

This issue is caused by many things, but the direct issue is alcohol commonly found in screen cleaners in my opinion.   It seem to remove the outer coating on the screen.   If you are using a alcohol based cleaner stop.   This included most commercial screen cleaners.

It has nothing to do with alcohol. About 30% of my coating went of by water and a fibre cloth ONLY. Others have reported too to have just used a fibre cloth and eventually with little water only. Alcohol might accelerate the removal, but it certainly is NOT REQUIRED.
