Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

Well, my machine was shipped up-country for a formal assessment today *sniff sniff*.

Dealing with the official AppleCare call centre was a pleasant enough experience, the guy was extremely courteous and reassuring, urging me not to worry. After speaking to the iStore clerk where I dropped it off though, I don’t hold very high hopes at all. I should know either way before the end of the week. Luckily we’re not too swamped with work at the moment, so I’m able to plod along on the 6 year old iMac, though it does feel like wading through molasses in comparison.

Attached is a picture of my AR coating starting to wear off, as you can see it’s not half as bad as some of yours… yet. By all accounts, it deteriorates rapidly once it’s got started.

I’ll let you all know once I receive the verdict.

    Fantastic news!

Apple Executive Relations from Ireland just called me, and after assessing my photographs the engineering department informed them that I would be eligible for free labour and a replacement screen!

It does indeed seem to be the case that they have finally cottoned on to the fact that this is a real problem, so I suggest to those of you that have been turned away before, try to contact AppleCare again with your issues and make sure to reference this thread.

Best of luck to all of those affected, I hope that you get the same good news and prompt service that I did!

    I have great news too.

I just finished a call with the Apple executive Relations in Japan. Even thought I'm outside my warranty period, they will replace the screen. Like you mentioned, they are starting to be aware about the issue.  I sent them pictures about my screen and their engineer evaluated as an issue.

She told me to say to other people that have this issue to call the Apple care centre about it.  Apple do care about their customers and now I'm more than glad that I bought this computer.

Everyone with this issue, time to call Apple then.

I posted that this issue has made the news in the UK and the post got deleted because it "contained a poll or a petition".

It didn't.  It contained a link to a news article.

    Very poor, Apple.

If my post must require a technical question or answer to prevent it from being removed, then I should ask: What are Apple doing about this?

All calls to action have been deleted, so I suspect that the mention of a certain facebook group or petition in the article was deemed enough to have the post removed.

    Very poor form indeed.

    Hi,

I have a 15-inch Macbook Retina Mid 2012 and I also have this problem.

Anti-reflective coating has started to peel off of my screen.

Last week I took it to Apple and they said they would have replaced the screen if it was still under warranty.

They said they would charge me 800 dollars for the screen replacement.

So I decided to take the alternate route. Once the AR screen starts peeling off there is no turning back.

I took a microfibre cloth and started to rub the screen with just tap water.

It took half an hour but I scraped the entire AR coating off. After which I looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his good days. Man that was some hard work.

Lets just say things are very shiny at the moment. But It looks way better. Better than before in some occasions TBH.

I'm thinking of getting one of these 3M privacy & anti-reflective filters and be done with it.

Meanwhile I will be waiting for a proper response from Apple.

    Cheers,

Do you have any before and after pictures that you could share?

I've read that people have had good results with the Moshi filter on this screen after the coating has been removed.

I would suggest that you contact Apple Care and explain your situation to them, as of recently a number of people have reported having had success with replacement authorisations from engineering.

petermac, Apple do read this. I have in the past complained about Ipad issue under different nickname and was contacted by apple engineers a couple weeks after it. Even left me 4 voice message. I managed to find a workaround of my Ipad problem so I did not returned the call (IOS faults by the way). But they do read. As of whether they will fix this issue since mac has to pay for the cost and involve a large number of recalls which translate into a huge costs for them. I am not sure if they will do anything with this here.

This has also happened to my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2013). It's only around the edges for now, but I'm worried that it's going to get worse. This machine is my main tool for doing all my uni work on, so I'm not too impressed let's say.

I've been buying Apple products since 2003 and this is the first issue I've had with one, I'm very unhappy. I'd call Technical Support, but I'm out of warranty and they want £25 from me to make a phone call to them.

Sadly I don't have any before pictures. It was right in the middle though.

    Here is an after picture.

As you can see it becomes very reflective after the AR coating is removed (duh)

My late 2013's screen (pic at the top of the page) was replaced this week, well outside of warranty. Parts and labour were free, and I have not been billed anything for the very friendly and professional service that I received telephonically.

You should contact Apple Care and reference this thread. They will likely ask you to send photographs (from up close, and as the damage relates to the screen as a whole), so it's worth having those ready when you call.

Nice job. You're 'lucky' that it came off so cleanly, from what I've seen, others seem to have had stubborn spots that they can't remove. Thanks for sharing!

I have pictures, just can't seem to figure out how to put them on this thread (they're on my iPhone). Did you pay the £25 service charge?

    Not to Apple, no.

I did however have to pay the retail store the equivalent of about £19 for sending it in, but only because I did not purchase it from them originally (we only have resellers in our country).
