Q: updating old versions of ilife

Mac App Store does not recognize old versions of iLife apps: iMovie and Garage Band.  I have tried several methods that involve deleting a receipt file and trying from a new user profile.  Because my Mac has been updated continuously beginning at OS 10.3 Panther, some supporting files seem to be in locations other than those described in some solutions.  After updating to Mavericks, I was able to update iPhoto for free, because I had purchased the AppStore version earlier for just that app.  I would like to update the others without having to purchase a new copy.  Any tips?

iMovie '08, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

You aren't entitled to continually upgrading the iLife apps. These are so old that you need to buy an upgrade. That's how the Mac App Store works. That's why at a point in the past you had to pay to upgrade iPhoto. Mac App Store apps are entitled to free updates, like v3.5 to v3.6. But they are not entitled to free paid upgrades, like v3.x to v4. It's time to buy the upgrade for iMove and GarageBand.
