Camera RAW update for Nikon D4s

Do you know when would the next MacOS Camera RAW update? Right now 10.9.2 cannot open the Nikon D4s RAW.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

¶2.1 of the Apple Support Communities - Terms of Use prohibit speculation about unannounced Apple products here.

If you want speculation, a web search will yield several Mac and Apple rumor sites.

You can configure your Mac to automatically watch for and install Apple updates as soon as they are released. If you cannot wait for the update you seek, you may find an acceptable workaround among the following suggestions.

OS X Mavericks: Supported digital camera RAW formats shows Nikon D4 but not D4s. If the earlier D4 RAW does not support the D4S's NEF (RAW Size S), the "Tech Specs" tab of Nikon's D4S Nikon Digital Camera | Flagship HDSLR Camera from Nikon seems to show that both NEF and NEF (RAW Size S) file formats are offered in the D4S.

I don't have a D4S to test. However, perhaps you can use the older (non-Size S) NEF format on your D4S until Apple's RAW Support is updated.

If not, and if you need immediate access to NEF (RAW Size S) image files, Nikon's Capture NX 2 software maybe your best choice for conversion to an image file format that is compatible with the software you use.

No, the standard RAW still not working in OS X 10.9.2

(1) If by "the standard RAW" you mean none of the the RAW format combinations (such as those described on page 95 of your camera's User Guide Manual), there may be something wrong with your 10.9.2 install because at least one should work.

 Restart Mac.

Use Mac's Disk Utility in Finder > Go > Utilities folder to repair permissions.

Reinstall OS X Mavericks.

Repair permissions again immediately following the restart

that finishes the reinstall.

Check whether any of the older D4 RAW file formats is now useable.

(2) If all else fails, pending Apple's update you can choose one of Nikon's options as described on:

page 91 of your camera's User Guide Manual (in part):

NEF (RAW) images can be viewed on the camera or using software such as Capture NX 2 (available separately;) or ViewNX 2 (available on the supplied ViewNX 2 installer CD). JPEG copies of NEF (RAW) images can be created using the NEF (RAW) processing option in the retouch menu.

If you choose the ViewNX 2 option, be sure you are using the version that supports the D4S. As explained on page 269 of your camera's User Guide Manual, earlier versions that do not support the D4S may fail to transfer NEF (RAW) images correctly.

This thread is talking about the D4s and not other RAW formats, right?

Therefore my previous comment was under that context. => Normal RAW = D4s standard size NEF files

I have a D4s. I only shoot the normal RAW, not the sRAW (up to this moment).

Both RAW formats are supported in the latest version of Capture NX2, View NX2, Adobe Lightroom and Photoshoh (more preciously, Adobe Camera RAW 8.4 for Adobe products)

But my workflow is started from Aperture. Without the OS level support, I

  • Cannot quick look the D4s NEF files in finder
  • Cannot quick look the D4s NEF files in any file system dialog box (i.e. other appllication open dialog box)
  • Cannot show the D4s NEF files content in Aperture
  • Cannot export the D4s NEF files in Aperture to other applications. (I used Catapult to export to Capture NX2 for editing)

For your information, Nikon D600 RAW was supported since 10.8.3 but the same resolution / family Nikon D610 is supported by Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.01*(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5371).

However, Apple D4S RAW support in OS X and Aperture is presently unannounced. Therefore, you will not find authoritative Apple info here speculating about when or even whether support will be added.

You're welcome!

This business about unannounced product speculation doesn't address any issue of importance. Those of us who use Nikon's top professional camera can use Lightroom but not Aperture, and we have no idea whatsoever when we'll be able to do that. That is not a professional way of doing business on Apple's part and it doesn't indicate much of a desire be supportive of their professional customers.

Of course Nikon shooters are upset, since there is no reason whatsoever that Apple could not have their D4s support out at the same time as Adobe, or that they cannot indicate to their customers when such supprt might be expected.
