You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

Upgrading to Mavericks

To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

Also PPC Macs can't run 10.6 let alone 10.7 through 10.9.   Be sure to correctly identify your machine and operating system.  And to amend what Kappy said about software, this tip explains what may or may not be compatible from another important viewpoint:

I've literally have tried for months to get this Maverick up grade but apple store and Itunes seem to be unresponsive.  I would advise people living in Taiwan that perhaps Apple is not servicing this area of the world.

This Apple ID has not yet been used with the App Store. (also will not let me download even free apps.)

Apple ID creation is not currently available on the Mac App Store. says: (go to itunes on your computer or ios device)

Using the Mac App Store application, or the web browser.  If the web browser, and you remember your password, you should delete all mention of Apple in your cookies in the browser security preferences, and reconnect.

I am a bit hesitant to try your method...because all of the other little fixes have just created more complication.

I have since dropped my Safari browser . and have opened Firefox.which is working fine so far.. I have talked to some Apple reps here and that is what they suggested..  Thanks.. PS .. Am still planning to try to upgrade to Maverick bu after after 2 weeks of trying ..bout ready to throw in the towel..thanks
