Display mirroring and Display on menu-bar is absent after OS 10.9.2 update, why?

Open System Preferences > Displays > Display
Select: Show mirroring options in the menu bar when possible

This is the standard procedure, but this does not work. Despite these options, no display-icon appears in the menu-bar? I think it is some thing wrong with the software update or might be a conflict .... what shall I do?
