I downloaded the new itunes but now it says I need to update my os x to 10.6 or later. I couldn't find that version. Does anyone have some advice to help me out, becasue I really need to back up my phone before I get my new one.

It would be helpful if you told us which version of OS X your Mac is currently running?
If you click on the apple in the upper left hand corner of the monitor and select About This Mac in the pull down menu
That should open a pane with the version of OS x list ed in it
