Connecting VGA Monitor to 2007 Macbook Pro

I am trying to connect my old 20" Princeton VGA monitor to my late 2007 Macbook Pro. I bought an adapter cord that fits perfectly but my Macbook Pro won't recognize that the monitor is there.

I tried changing the resolution but it did not work.

I have used an HDMI cable to connect to my HDTV and it works fine but I cannot get it to work with the VGA monitor and the new cable.

How do you get it to work?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 750GB HD, 2.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM

OK, I just had to restart the Macbook Pro with the VGA monitor already on and it detected it. It seems to be mirroring my MBP display but does not display the corsor on it. I want to use it as a second monitor not a mirror. Any ideas?

Well, I plugged in a mouse and restarted to computer again. Went to Preferences and played with the different options... particularly Mirroring and now it works as a second monitor! 🙂
