My iphone 5s is only ringing or making a sound upon receiving text messages randomly. Can't figure out why this might be happening.

Thank you for the question. It sounds like there is occasionally no sound with an incoming text message. Have you checked to see if Do Not Disturb was accidentally enabled? You will see a "moon" icon in the status bar if it is enabled.
You can disable Do Not Disturb in Settings > Do Not Disturb or in the Control Center as described in the following articles:

Additionally, you may want to verify the Ring/Silent switch is set to ring mode:
