Audio not working through stereo

Hi.

I bought the newest ATV yesterday, and installed it today. It works perfectly fine when the audio is playing through the internal speekers of my Samsung TV. However, when I connect my stereo to the tv (via HDMI), and select external speekers in the tv settings, there's no audio at all. Of course I could watch movies with "normal" sound, but I would very much like to use my stereo. My stereo only has 1 HDMI output, and it goes to the tv. I have an HDMI from the ATV to the TV, and optical audio cable from ATV to TV.

I've read dozens of articles regarding this problem, and I have tried everything. Resetting, restarting, turn off Dolby Digital and so on.

Whilst leaving the stereo unconnected, and playing through the internal tv speerks, and turning on airplay, the audio also stops.

I am not very experienced with these kind of things, so I would greatly appreciate it if someone would help me.

Aren't your external speakers connected directly to your stereo system's receiver? If so, then connect the optical audio cable coming from your ATV to your receiver's optical audio input, not the TV's optical audio input. If your receiver has multiple optical audio inputs, be sure to identify to which optical audio input the ATV's optical audio output cable is connected.
