I have a mac mini, mac wired keyboard and a third party monitor. The function keys and brightness keys do not work. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this issue?

The monitor related keys most likely do not control your 3rd party monitor because it is not integrated.
If you have an 'fn' key on your keyboard, try holding the 'fn' key while pressing a function key.
Also look at System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys
