Connect to iTunes and check update or go into Settings>General>Software Update. Your checking to see if you have any updates available. Then go from there. You didn't say which iPod you have... If you are attempting to get iOS 7 and you have something other than an iPod 5, you can't. iOS 7 requires 512MB of RAM, only the iPod 5 has the needed RAM. Hope this helps. Cheers.

The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.

Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows
