I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either.

Does this also work for Airport?

I need to connect a Wi-Fi device (pet feeder) but it only accepts Wi-Fi 2.4GHz.

My internet provider said I probably needed to separate the 2.4 from the 5 in order to allow the device to connect to my iPhone. The Airport is relatively new (purchased last November 19 at Best Buy).

The pet feeder device is a Smart Feeder from Petnet.

Is the method you describe for Airport Express separation of 2.4 from 5 the same for Airport?

Thanks for any help here.

Thank you!

I executed your instructions this morning but did not have time to test the 2.4GHz with the pet feeder which I will do tonight.

Are there any 'tricks' to getting Wi-Fi recognition at the 2.4GHz channel?

After selecting the 5GHz, I did have to point my Mac to it to access internet.

Will I need to do that with all the devices on my Wi-Fi network?

No, other then selecting that network from the device that will be using it.

No, since the 2.4 GHz network will have the original name that you gave for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Here, I am assuming that you only changed the name of the 5 GHz network.

If you followed the instructions that I provided above, you have two networks.

One network....the 2.4 GHz network.....is using the same name that you originally gave to both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals. The other network.....the one that you added the "5 GHz" name to, is the 5 GHz network.

So, if your original name for both networks was "wireless", and you enabled the option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network......you now have one network named "wireless".....which is the 2.4 GHz network....and another network named "wireless 5 GHz"...which is the 5 GHz network.

Devices that connect to "wireless" will use the 2.4 GHz band and devices that connect to "wireless 5 GHz" will use the 5 GHz band.

I have an airport express

There are at least 4 different versions of this product, with each having different features and functions. Could you provide the model number for your AirPort Express?

and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks.

You would use AirPort Utility on your Mac or PC, or possibly an iOS device, to adjust the settings on the AirPort Express. There are over 10 different versions of AirPort Utility, so we would need to know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC to be able to provide any setup details.

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.

This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.

It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility

Click on the AirPort Express

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window

Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window

Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it

Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart

Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name. 2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.
