Q: color crashes with dpx files

Hi all,

I'm editing a short that originated on 35mm and delivered to me as DPX files.  I know the (theoretical) route through - transcode to ProRes and reconform back to the DPX files later, but every time I try to import the file, Color crashes.  Before I go down the Resolve avenue, I wondered if this was a common problem?  I've been back and checked the manual and am following it to the letter!

Thanks,

Aaron

Can you describe how are you converting the DPX to ProRes with a bit more detail?

    What software does the conversion?

    What version of ProRes?

    What version of Color?

Any 3rd party cards supporting reference monitoring - Aja Kona, BM Decklink, Matrox ?

If so, do you have updated drivers for 10.9 ?

    fwiw -

A friend had so many issues with a Black Magic intensity he pulled back from 10.9.

I use Color 1.5.3 on a 2008 MacPro running 10.8.5 with a nVidia Quadro 4000 + AJA Kona Lhi and have no issues.

    Hi X,

In Color, I'm trying to add the folder with the DPX files in (as detailed in the manual) i.e. Selecting the folder in the setup room before hitting Import Directory and placing it into a sequence.  I was then going to render the file out as ProRes 422 HQ for a mastering format to HD and lower bitrate ProRes for editing with.  I'm assuming eventually it'll go back to DPX, but I can reconform later prior to a full grade.

I was going to use Color to do the conversion, but it looks like Resolve may be the way to go now?

    Color 1.5.3

    No third party cards

Interesting that you run it fine on an older machine, I may give it a try at home where I'm running a similar setup.

    Thanks,

    A

You might find this older thread on the Cow of internest.

Read down to the bottom -

One thing that might get in the way is that Color cannot open any old DPX. There's some 'endian' thing involved. For instance Color cannot open a DPX seq that comes out of Lustre or Smoke.

    Hope this helps.
