What causes a kernel panic?

How can I find out what caused a "kernel panic" and/or How can I repair it?

The computer works fine once I start it up but everytime I go to shut it down the warning comes up and I have to hold the power button down to shut it down.

If I copy a backup hard drive from an emergency HD disk will that repair the issue?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), loaded print scanner driver

you would of course want a known clean system or create one - on a new drive or newly erased, not from one you had.

trouble with these freezes is the compound and tend to cause more problems potentially to the disk directory.

a clean system, a stripped bare bones machine, and that way eliminate most of the software side, directory and such.

corrupt NVRAM can sneak in there during all this. USB devices are notorious.

RAM and graphic cards, heat also.

Rule everything out , then add them back one by one slowly, gradually.

What was the last thing before this happened to trigger it? how long has it been happening?

Do you have a bootable backup clone of your system - from before this began happening?

Thanks everybody for your help!! - I have a harddrive that I recently coppied before any of this started. I have disconnected all my peripherals and only have Mac keyboard and mouse. It still is happening every time I shut down. The last thing I remember doing is loading a print/scan driver from brother's site. After which I hah some problems because the printer/scanner still wouldn't work. I have now dumped the files for Printer & Scanner and the twain plugin.

If I switch the hard drive for my recently cloned hard drive and then erase the current drive abd re=clone that drive with the old drive will that work?

I am inserting the panic code from the crash report.

t he whole idea of a clone backup is to USE the clone, you don't need to erase adn restore it. You may want to later.

You can't repair a drive w/o booting from another system drive, which is another reason to have multiple boot drives.

System boot drive / working clone backup / clone from last month / small emergency maintenance drive perhaps

OS X is small enough that all that is needed is generally a 40GB partition, or a 100GB SSD, a slice off any drive can serve as a place to have a bootable alternate sytem backup/clone

And you can use a sparse disk image

All of the data should not be on the boot drive. Free up space, improves performance to have it on a 'data drive" and keep the system as "system only" for OS and apps, and a small part of user account ( ~/ ) "/Library"

Takes minutes to update a clone, and always able to option boot to a working backup.

There is also no "master" or "have to boot from the drive bay #1 (or zero) so again, no need to switch. Only if using USB2 or FW400 due to slow boot and speed would you.

I put a small 120GB partition on my 2TB TimeMachine drive for convenience and for emergency and because it is handy to have, and that is more than enough space. Just shrink a partition.

In Lion and later there is a Recovery Partition but it is limited in what you can do and tools available. Also, Safe boot has improved and I would always after a failed shutdown, invoke either another boot drive or a Safe Boot.

Some of the very invasive so-called protection software has stopped your Mac dead in its tracks.

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):

net.kromtech.kext.Firewall(2.3.6)@0x86135000->0x86138fff

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: MacKeeper Helper

net.kromtech.kext.Firewall 2.3.6 - last loaded 87830595106

com.symantec.kext.SymAPComm 11.1.2f17

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.6.6

com.symantec.kext.pf 4.1.1f13

com.symantec.kext.ips 3.2f8

com.symantec.kext.internetSecurity 1.3.2f5

The software you have installed is far, far worse that anything it could possibly protect you from. You have also broken a very important rule: NEVER install Multiple different protection software -- each one thinks the other is an intruder.

If you want a trouble-free system, you will need to remove all this stuff and run plain Mac OS X, no invasive add-ons.
