The area around the photo will be the background color selected for the page. The only option is to change the background color of the page to one that would be acceptable (if its a full page layout).
Another option is to crop the photo to the same size ratio as the frame and not use the fit photo to frame feature. That's 4:3 for most frames and 1:1.29 for full page 8.5 x 11 book pages.
