No, it is definately not a windows thing. It's a hardware thing. Intel allows manufacturers to call their notebooks centrino if certain conditions are met (intel chipset, pentium-m or core processor and intel wlan hardware).
MB and MBP are not "Centrino" because they use a different WLAN hardware from atheiros.
