Is this is a 3rd gen iPod, with a touch wheel (not click wheel) and four separate touch botton in a row between the wheel and display? That model needs to have a FireWire connection to properly connect and charge. It has a dock connector like later models that work with USB, but the 3rd gen iPod can only charge using a FireWire connection.

So, your Mac has a FireWire 400 port (or a FireWire 800 port with an adapter), and you can using that FireWire docking cable to connect the iPod?

If so, what (if anything) does the iPod's display say or do when you connect it to FireWire?

My 3rd gen iPod still works fine on my Mac mini, with the latest OS and iTunes, so it should not be an issue with the OS or iTunes version.
