If you are willing to spend money on professional tool with free support, if the team get's large, I would ask you to look at ConceptDraw Project. If you are dead set on open source and "free" software I would say that Redmine, Bugzilla or any other that has been around a while, and looking for plugins to make it suit your needs is one of your best bets.

I have been trialling Smartsheet but am disappointed with lack of layout options. I need a PM software that's works seamlessly with MS Project - is ConceptDraw Project the answer?

Its an old post I know still, it could be helpful. Apple has a subsidiary; FileMaker.

There are some developers who made solutions in FileMaker, with the nice benifit that FileMaker is cross-platform. (for those who have windows college's)
