The score and a harmonic minor key..how?

More of a matrix edit type myself..The score editor is very new to me.

I found how to set the key of a region but how do i tell it i want a harmonic minor?

How does that work in notation anyhow (the different minor keys)?

Hi Chaosmoon

I haven't used the score editor myself but I don't think Logic would differentiate between a natural minor key and a harmonic minor notation wise. You score editor experts correct me if I'm wrong. Every major key has a relative minor key that is minor third below the root major. For instance C Major - relative A Minor has no sharps or flats. So you would set the key signature to C Major to program in A Minor and if you wanted a harmonic minor scale you would have to manually sharp the 7 note (G#). If you wanted wanted to play an ascending melodic minor your would sharp the 6 note (F#) and seven note (G#). Hope this helps.

les is quite correct - no notator will differentiate between types of minor styles - there is actually no need to.

simply set the key - this is global and will affect all regions from that point in the song.

logics score editor is actually quite intuitive and fast to use once you have a handle on it. i actually use it preference to other score editors.

just to clarify:

if the key is Aminor

the pure version (aeolian) is: a b c d e f g
the harmonic is: a b c d e f g#
the melodic is: a b c d e f# g#
the dorian is: a b c d e f# g

yes logic will represent these ok. (accidentally speaking).

however, i have experienced many grammatical errors when the key is highly sharped or flatted.

eg: in C#minor, logic will spell a B# as a Cnatural.(leading tone).

Hi Chaosmoon,

Simply select the appropriate minor key signature in the Score's toolbox and your raised seventh scale degree will be recognized as such and reflected in your notation (spelled as a leading tone).

If you instead choose your minor keys relative Major key signature your raised seventh will be recognized as an enharmonic equivalent of the leading tone and spelled as a flat tonic. All of your other chromatic harmony (secondary dominants, Neapolitans, Augmented 6ths, Linear diminished, etc.) will have to be adjusted in order to be spelled correctly.

Hint: "Flats to Sharps" and "Sharps to Flats" key commands can really speed up the workflow.

Having a passion for highly contrapuntal music I do all of my writing on paper and then later transfer it into Logics score.
