piano sound is layered

I use Garageband to record rehearsal trax for my students using a midi keyboard to play their parts. Today I downloaded and installed the new version of Garageband 10.0.2. But for some reason, the piano sound is layered with a sort of wave synth sound that I can't get rid of. I did a little online research and different people suggest throwing away different things, but I can't figure it out. Any suggestions? I even opened up the old version but it is infected with this problem now too. Thanks!

What "piano sound" you are referring to?

Did you select the Steinway Grand Piano Patch in the Library?

The way you describe it sounds like a layer, two instruments playint at the same time. Here are a few steps you can try:

  • Are you sure you turned down your external MIDI keyboard, does it have its own sound generator?
  • Did you try using the Musical TYping Keyboard (cmd+K) to se if you have the same issue?
  • Do you have Multi-track recording enabled, mybe a synth Track is record enabled too?
  • Do you still get a level reading on the Master Volume Meter in the Control Bar when you turned down the yeboard track.
  • Any other Meter on other Tracks in your Project is active?
  • Do you have any other DAW running in the background that receives the same MIDI input from your eternal keyboard?

Hope that helps

Wow! Thank you so much! I feel so silly...I sat down to try all of these things, and believe it or not, after restarting the keyboard, it went back to its default settings and the sound is no longer there! I tried just pushing other buttons to see if I could recreate the problem, and it is a button on the far left top (M-Audio Keystation 61es) called "advanced functions". Not even sure what it's for, but I had to restart the keyboard again to get that strange sound to stop!

So, after all that, perhaps someone else will search the name of the keyboard due to the same dumb thing and find this post.

Thanks for your time and effort! I really do appreciate it! 😀
