This is a general error message that is shown when the iPod is not able to start up properly. The cause is often a faulty hard drive. However, you can try the following.

First, do a Reset (restart) if you have not already

If that returns to the same message, put the iPod into Disk Mode.

If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes on the Mac and connect the iPod. If iTunes prompts you to do a Restore, do the Restore. This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.

If it does not go into Disk Mode, or if the Restore process fails, the most likely cause is a faulty hard drive.
