Why can't I print PDFs in Mavericks??

Have had an HP8600 for ages - no issues printing/scanning/faxing. Upgraded to Mavericks. Now I can not print pdf documents - all other files are fine. It repeats a small section multiple times. Have tried using the HP driver 3.3.3, AirPrint, deleting printer & reinstalling, printing as an image, etc. I can not find any other other postings so I must be overlooking something. Any help appreciated.
